I am in the process of filling out the VP nomination form and at the end of the form it says to “send letters of rec directly to the service academy“. It does not say how many recommendations and does not clarify if the letter of rec I have to submit for the USNA app are the same as the letters for the VP?

1. What class are you filling this info for? I thought VP Nom application closed for c/o2025.
2. You just have to fill up the form and submit. Make sure to take a screen capture of the submission so that you know you have submitted. You wont get any email confirmation. The screen capture is just for you.
3. No rec letters are required to fill up VP NOM. Just fill up information and essay on web page and submit. That's it. Make sure to select which SA do you want to have this VP nom tied to.

2026, the VP form opened today for us

The specific SA reviews and selects the VP nom. Keep in mind, there are only 5 per SA at one time. So, they are very selective.

The number of nomination letters that show up in your USNA Portal as "Optional" is the amount you send to the academy. Those letters you send to USNA count towards the VP Nom.

My DD sent 3 letters of recommendation to USNA for the VP nomination for class of 25. She had 3 of her people that did MOC recommendations do the VP also. Same letter they just changed the heading. She mailed all to USNA.

Keep in mind too, there is no mad rush right now.
Be thoughtful and intentional in every action from here on out.
This is a marathon, not a sprint, and attention to detail counts.
Have you thought through your essays? Polished them to a high sheen? Will you be happy with them several months from now?
You want to put your best application together, and submit that best as early as possible, but that could be mid-summer, and you would still be surfing the first waves.

Getting teachers educated on what you will be asking from them for SA and nom apps, getting their contact info before summer, training for the CFA and getting that done, and done solidly, before next fall are the usual early tasks, along with prepping for nom application due dates.

I was not aware that rec letters for VP nom are required. I just filled up the form on VP Nom site and that's about it. Does that means I will not be considered for VP NOM.? I have a LOA but no NOM.

Hey, I am trying to find where I can fill out the application. Do you have the link?

the form I filled out was for c/o2026 not 2025, the 2025 deadline already passed

When it asks about hobbies, how in-depth do I go? Are these little paragraphs or just one-sentence explanations?

I personally gave at most four sentences. Just enough to explain my interests. For example, my longest one was archery as that's not very common. Cross country took two and Jrotc took three. Remember they (service academies I believe) are reading hundreds of VP Nominations.

Ok, thanks! I do a lot of music stuff so I was confused but I can probably fit it in 3-4 sentences.

While technically correct, the statement that "there are only 5 per SA at one time" is the source of much confusion. In practice many more than 5 will be attending with a VP nomination.
  • From a slate of 10 VP Nominations, 1 will be selected as the "slate winner" and charged as one of the five attendees
  • The other 9 nominees can use the VP Nomination to be appointed in another, non-congressional appointment category. For these categories a nomination is required and it doesn't matter where it comes from
  • SA's use those VP nominations for candidates they want to appoint, but don't have a nomination from another source
As far as letters of recommendation, there is no need to send separate letters specific to the VP nomination since the letters will go directly into the candidate's SA file - it would duplicate any letter the same person wrote to the SA.
