Vice President Nomination

DS submitted his VP nomination application today. No acknowledgement or confirming email…..Odd. No request for standardized test scores or transcripts either. Not sure if that is just how it goes with the VP nomination.
DS did that too a few days ago. According to WH website, VP nomination will let SA to rank applicants.

Posted for the benefit of upcoming classes of applicants, from the VP nomination website. Note there are 5 noms available spread across 4 classes, with the DoD SAs managing the process. They can use those noms however they wish. Perhaps USNA has given an LOA to a candidate they really want, but the candidate lives in a fiercely competitive state where the Senators and Representative collaborate to not duplicate noms across slates, and no matter how many SAs the candidate has applied for, they have gotten just 1 nom - to a school not USNA. USNA may decide to use the VP nom for this candidate. We usually don’t see these show up in the appointment lists until late in the cycle, because I am sure all the Admissions teams have hard decisions to make on these.

VP Nom Copied Content follows:
The Vice President is authorized to nominate individuals to the United States Military, Naval, and Air Force Academies but cannot nominate to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and does not nominate to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

The Vice President is the only authorized nominating authority who can nominate U.S. citizens without geographical restrictions. He or she may have a maximum number of five nominees in attendance at each authorized academy at any one time. Normally, he or she has one or two vacancies each year. To be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must complete the online nomination application during the application period of March 1 to January 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies. The Office of the Vice President will not accept paper applications.

Due to a large volume of applicants (usually several thousand per academy), the Vice President has authorized the academies to evaluate all applications and rank them according to qualifications. In screening candidates, the academies evaluate an individual’s high school or college academic record, results of the ACT and SAT tests, recommendations from individuals who are in a position to judge the applicant’s character and academic potential, and physical and medical qualifications. In view of this screening by the academies, any correspondence subsequent to an applicant’s actual application (e.g., letters of recommendation, high school and college transcripts, and ACT/SAT examination results) must be sent directly to the academy when requested. Do not send this information directly to the Office of the Vice President.

Notification of those selected for a nomination is normally made in late winter or early spring of the year in which the class convenes.

For any additional information regarding Vice Presidential nominations, please contact the appropriate academy directly.

I am a first generation student applying to USAFA. My parents are great supports, but they are not able to help me. Also, I attend a large public high school where my counselor is just so swamped all the time. Sadly, she doesn't know much about the process. So I have relied on a family friend to help me, and he just told me about this forum. He also told me to search by topic and by your name specifically.

I have a question about the VP Nomination process.

I had no idea there was an actual application until I read your post here. And now I am kicking myself. I think I completely misunderstood the VP process. When I saw the VP nominations were given by the Academy, I assumed they based those nominations off my Candidate Kit and that there was no separate application required for the VP nomination..
So do I need to complete the application online at the WhiteHouse.gov in order to be considered for a VP nomination?

Here is where I am currently:

- My Candidate Kit is 100% complete.
- I have interviewed with my 2 Senators and my Congressman. I have received one Senator nomination so far.
- I am DoDMERB QUALIFIED.
- I have completed my ALO interview and it went really well.
- I have completed my CFA and scored well.

I would be grateful for any help you can give me.

Although the question is directed to @Capt MJ, the simple answer to your question is, "Yes". As per guidance provided at whitehouse.gov:

"In order to be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must complete the online nomination application during the application period of March 1 to January 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies. The Office of the Vice President will not accept paper applications."

I'll let @Capt MJ add more, but in simple terms, 'yes.' You must complete the application that is online as you noted. The good news is that it is due on January 31, 2024 so you have plenty of time to submit it. As you noted, ultimately, the VP nominations are determined by the individual SAs.

Best of luck with your applications!

Glad you found us.

First, deep breath, you are fine on time as long as you apply by your application deadline.

Follow the directions to submit for each SA you are applying to. The SA reviews, evaluates and selects VP nominees. It’s an at-large nom.

If you run into any difficulties with completing it, you can call your USAFA Admissions contacts. Or, ask a question here, and I am sure those who have just navigated the application will respond.

Keep in mind only 5 appointments can be charged to this nom source, but you don’t want to leave any chances on the table.

You are in a good place with the state of your application.

And welcome new member if < one hour!

LOL that's great. And good reminder. Deep breaths are good.

I am still a little confused though. I am not sure which deadline you are referring to.

My Candidate Kit deadline was November 30th, and I am now having troubling understanding this language on the VP Nomination page:

"In order to be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must complete the online nomination application during the application period of March 1 to January 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies."

Does that mean I have until January 31, 2024 to submit an application for a VP nomination? Or was my deadline to submit a VP Nomination application November 30th, like for my Candidate Kit?

Thanks so much. I trying to get the hang of navigating this forum. Huge help. Thanks again. Deep breaths like Capt MJ said. lol

I just saw that other people gave some help too. So I now have the answer to my question. I am going to work on my VP nom application asap. Thank you again for your quick help.

My DS also applied for the VP nom. We are just happy he got noms for the 3 SAs even as an alternate from our MOC cause a nom is still a nom. His USAFA ALO is very encouraging to tell him that he doesn't need to mind his nomination category as he thinks my DS application is competitive. If the SA wants you, they will appoint you. So more waiting and more reading in this forum! I am also so glad I found this site through google! Thanks to everyone who administers this site and takes the time to answer all questions from a lot of folks who are navigating this complex process. Happy New year to all! Hopefully, my DS will be part of one of the SAs class of 2028. ❤️
