My son got an e-mail today about the Virtual Summer Seminar. Wondering what the format will be...says a Navy Seal is leading PT...that sounds exciting.

Yes! Someone in one of my candidate groups find which seal is doing the seminar and it appears the video has been filmed! I cannot remember who it was exactly but I am very excited!

My guess is, it is Stew Smith. He has run PEP for several years for NASS. He is great follow on insta, FB etc. He has excellent prep guides for various services "enlistments" available through his web site.

This thread is about NASS, but also interesting to look ahead — for some — to plebe summer. PEP is led by Major Antonelli, a USNA grad and former Marine. He has been in the role for quite a while, and his command over the 5:30 sessions is impressive (having witnessed once but also feedback from DS).

What you want to avoid is pool PEP, the infamous substitute for regular PEP. It’s for the walking wounded who are otherwise capable of getting in the water. It’s actually harder than regular PEP — intentionally so. Makes you want to get back to Major Antonelli’s land version as quickly as possible. During DD’s plebe summer, when she was briefly injured and had to endure pool PEP, it was led by a SEAL.

Can confirm it is stew smith. Saw on his instagram a few weeks ago that he said he was recording a video at USNA for NASS.

my daughter has a friend doing it this week.....yesterday the workouts were on your own, then they had online stuff going for the rest of the time allotted. I don't think its anything close to being there and experiencing summer seminar like in years past, but it is what it is this year.

Anyone attending this week? What do you think?
I'm frustrated. My DD is in a group of all boys and was excluded from today's physical challenge by the group of them. They split the activities among them and told her to do nothing. Their instructor is female and of course was talking part, but not my DD. She's an asset to any physical challenge as she works in a gym and teaches fitness classes among a long list of other things. I told her I didn't teach her to not stand up for herself and be benched for no reason, but she's not ready to ruffle feathers and mention the sexist injustice. Makes my heart hurt. This challenge was her bread and butter and she just sat there dumbfounded that that just happened.

That stinks, but would’ve been great opportunity for her to step up and advocate for herself. Not the same thing as ruffling feathers — just taking a stand. Not ready to assume it was sexist injustice. Might have been a simple oversight.

In any case, USNA is 75% men, and though they’re a relatively enlightened bunch, women still need to speak up on their own behalf sometimes. If done respectfully yet forcefully, the men will take heed. Now is as good a time to start flexing that muscle — literally and figuratively.

I understand totally. But in my daughter's eyes it's hard to feel part of the team if you're forcing yourself on it. And oversight or not being the only girl in the group and being the only one excluded, hard to see it another way. It's a shame, summer seminar was supposed to be a glimpse into life at the academy and be a fun few days. She's been looking forward to it since being accepted in March. Sitting the bench today then watching them all chat about how "they killed it" is far from fun.

that is very disappointing....I will have to ask my daughter to get an update from her friend that is participating this week....she did not talk to her last night - but that is no fun. hopefully next time your daughter is in that situation she will be ready to step up and ask to be included...

The team doesn’t realize it, but they didn’t ‘kill it’ if they excluded someone completely from the group. If there is an opportunity for an after action or review this is what needs to be brought up. Not sure who is leading these sessions, but if it’s 3/C Mids it’s one of those items that may have slipped past them. They are young and were doing summer seminar two years ago themselves. I understand not wanting to ‘ruffle feathers’ and as time progresses and she matures, she will learn how to speak up on her behalf. I know the virtual summer seminar is new and probably all over the map, but hope she gets a CVW to really see what USNA is about.
