Has anyone heard of an instance where a candidate who had no MoC nomination get an appointment through a VP nomination? I am just curious due to the fact that my DS did receive three MoC nominations but all to the USAFA. He did submit for a VP nomination and did receive the generic auto-response that his application was received. He was hoping that the USNA would still be in play and provide another option should he not get an appointment to the USAFA or USCGA. The USNA has become his first choice by a slight margain lately, but is certainly open to the other 2 SA's he applied to.

Just curious...

As a general rule - I would anticipate that the Supe's and the VP's nominations go to somebody the USNA really desires be that a recruited athlete or someone the academy deems as truly special and somehow fell through the MoC nomination process. If you are just the typical high achiever applicant, I wouldn't put much hope in getting bailed out in the end by the Supe or VP process. Not saying it can't happen, but I wouldn't make any plans in anticipation that it will happen.

Yes, I have. I know of a few who received either VP or Supt's nom when they did not get a MOC Nom. They were LOA recipients and water walkers in terms of their applications. The ones I saw all came out of Northern VA area where nearly everyone on a MOC slate has extremely impressive credentials. They also received appointments very late in the process as VP and Supt's noms can move around quiet a bit.

That is what I explained to my DS. Like I mentioned, he is totally OK with the USAFA and has no qualms at all with it. It was his first choice prior to attending the USNA CVW in September. And, he has two friends from CAP who are there at the USAFA, so that will help should he get an appointment. He was just hoping for one additional option should that opportunity arise.

One suggestion is for your DS to contact his MOCs and see if there is any chance to "switch" his nom from USAFA to USNA. There may be someone nominated to USNA who now really wants USAFA. It's also possible that the MOC either didn't fill out his/her slate (i.e., didn't nominate 10 people for a vacancy) so could add your DS to the slate.

Both of the above are long, long, long shots, especially this late in the game -- and DS may already have tried this. But it only takes a few phone calls and you might get lucky.

That was under consideration. But, here is the fear (and the luck he would have). He would get moved off of a USAFA MoC slate where he was most competitive and moved to a USNA MoC slate where is would be less competitive. It's like playing Russian Roulette :)

In talking with him, he intends to keep all 3 MoC nominations as they are as that in theory gives him 4 chances for the USAFA. If a miracle happens and a VP nom pops up for the USNA, then we'll see what happens. I will have DS contact the MoC's to see if any of them have an open vacancy on their USNA slate.

Thanks for the information.
