I was wondering if the waiver standards at USMMA are significantly different from the other academies considering that you can commission into NOAA, USPHS, and the Merchant Marines? Considering these environments are different from those that active duty military officers experience are they more/less likely to grant waivers for certain conditions?

I believe if you commission into one of those agencies you are also committed to a reserve commission in the military, thus Navy standards dictate for KP. I have one son at KP now and one starting in a state maritime school in August, as DoDMERB didn't clear him, but his 719(k) met merchant marine standards set forth by USCG. Get DoDMERB done early so you have adequate time for waiver process.

Thank you for the insight!

First of all, and before you get too far down the road, we are not Merchant Marines; we are Merchant Mariners and likely will serve in the Merchant Marine.

The full text of the service obligation can be found at Service Obligation. Note the first paragraph where it says "Questions regarding the Service Obligation can be directed to the Maritime Administration by email maritime.graduate@dot.gov or by phone (202) 366-7618." You might want to do that suggested action to get clarification of your specifics.

USMMA does not grant waivers for color blindness.
Not really the USMMA, but the US Coast Guard. They will not issue a license to anyone who is color blind, and without a license, you cannot graduate. . .

Thank you, sorry if I wasn’t being clear, I was referring to admissions process and waivers in that. Yes, it’s driven by coast guard license process.

The admissions process is well covered at Steps to Admission. Beyond what is there I doubt anyone here could assuredly answer your question "are they more/less likely to grant waivers for certain conditions." Waivers are considered/granted at all the academies on a more or less individual basis.
