Ok, so this is my first post here.

I'm going to be attending USMA in the summer of 2010 (C/O 2014) and I was wondering something.

When I arrive, am I supposed to bring a laptop and do I have to buy books?

Could you please tell me what all I have to bring and what is provided by the Academy?

Thanks in advance.

You should be getting a list of what you should, can, and cannot bring. After you get this list, debating the points of what is most valuable is an interesting exercise. Not sure if anyone here could provide a link to last year's list.

You do not bring a laptop or books. They will be issued to you.

All you need is the paperwork they will tell you to bring, anything else is optional. I think they are changing it so you have to bring ACU boots this year but it could be a rumor. Besides that, you can show up in your underwear with the right papers and they will take you in.

First, congratulations on your appointment to West Point and your decision to pursue a career in service to our country.

As the previous poster indicated, you will receive information about the personal items you can bring to USMA when you report on R-Day. They are very limited and easily fit into a small duffle bag.

Virtually everything you need, and are allowed to have, during Beast will be issued to you. After Beast and your acceptance into the Corps of Cadets, the academic year begins and you will purchase or be issued your books and other materials. The cost of those items, as well as your uniforms and other supplies/services, are charged against your Cadet Account which is funded by your monthly pay.

This will all be explained in the various mailings USMA will send you between now and R-Day.

Each year the list varies just a bit; two years ago, new cadets arrived w/ boots and low quarters...last year, just low quarters. Best advice is to read every piece of mail that arrives from WP. You will be well-informed in plenty of time to purchase the appropriate items.

Congrats on your appointment!!

Go Army, Beat Navy!
