Hi Everyone!

I’m wanting to come on here and ask for genuine opinions about what you think my shot of receiving an appointment is.

This is my 4th year applying to USAFA. Directly after high school where I had a 3.6 GPA, I attended a preparatory school for the SA’s. There I did pretty well in the challenging classes equal to the academics at USAFA.

I have 2 nominations this year (Congressional and Commander) as I am also prior enlisted.

My ACT is low in comparison with a super of 23. (This is the portion of which I am worried)

As for my CFA scores I had a 52” basketball throw, 95 sit-ups, 30 push-ups, 2 pull-ups, 9.2 shuttle, and a 8:15 mile.

I was previously in JROTC in high school as the Group Commander with multiple awards and recognitions, have over 50+ logged flight hours and soloed when I was 16, Varsity Sports in HS and College (Captains for all), and many other clubs and organizations with district and state level ratings and awards.

I’m not sure what else to add into this so if anyone has any questions that you believe would affect my chance, please let me know!

Any comments are appreciated and good luck to all of the other applicants this year! Hopefully we’ll get in🤞🏻

4th reapp? You are dedicated. Your ACT is low for USAFA but it depends on your college GPA too.

Did you pass your CFA with those scores?

No one here can give you any meaningful odds (and don’t believe anyone who says they can). Despite the information you provided, we just don’t have enough information to have full context.

https://www.usafa.edu/app/uploads/CL2025-Class-Profile.pdf

Here is USAFA’s profile for the class of 2025, straight from the website. You can see where you stand. Look, in particular, at the middle 50% for the ACT.

https://www.academyadmissions.com/requirements/physical/

Here is a list of CFA averages for those accepted to USAFA, again straight from there website. You can see where your own scores stand.

Again, “chance me” doesn’t work here because of information gaps. But these two links can help you draw your own conclusions.

Does anybody know why SAT averages for USAFA went up so much compared to previous years?

Using the numbers from 2019 compared to 2025, which is to some extent extrapolation, the averages are actually pretty noticeable. When I first read this reply, I thought "no way they are that different" but wowza.

Class of '19: 642 EBRW, 672 Math
Class of '25: 712 EBRW, 742 Math

That's 70 points in each category. From the two-class profiles published, I did notice that the overall high school GPA's were different, 3.84 and 3.88 respectively. It doesn't seem like a huge difference, but if you have to increase an average of over 11-1200 people, the individual GPA's are going to be relatively huge. It's a cool thing about numbers.

I cannot find the other class profiles, or rather, the test scores, but I'm noticing in each profile that I find that the GPA is going up by an hundreth or two every year. Draw what insights you will from this.

If anybody is interested, I found the class of 2022’s profile which should have scores from the new SAT.
Mean R/W: 670
Mean Math: 695

Here's another wrinkle about the Class of '25 and testing. I met a family whose doolie wasn't able to take any standardized tests due to Covid. My own doolie had only one opportunity - so no superscoring in some cases as well.

I was looking at the 2025 Class Profile and I couldn't figure out what the difference between "Candidate Pool" and "Qualified Candidates" was. Is the first referencing those who passed the PCQ and the latter referencing those who have completed the entire application with a nomination and passing CFA? If this is the case, it looks like they take just under half of the qualified candidates. I'm right around '25's class averages for most points and just trying to get an idea of where I stand. Thanks so much!

@Hatchet, this I know: In recent years at the DOD SAs, about 40% - 45% of candidates who are 3Q with a nomination are offered appointment. Do NOT read this as having 50% chance of being accepted. That’s not the same thing. Some of those who are 3Q with a nom have 90% chance, some have 10% chance. YMMV.

@MidCakePa I understand. Thank you very much! I'm doing my best not to look too deeply into it since I can't control any of it from this point on. I have received an appointment from another SA, which gives me confidence, but I tend to swing back and forth in how confident I am in my competitiveness. I have more B's than A's on my transcript this semester (maybe the most important semester) and it's making me nervous. I am taking the most challenging courses that my school offers so that may make up for it. Thoughts?

My guess is that the Class of 2025 admissions cycle was test flexible due to Covid. Poor test takers probably didn't try very hard to get a test date. Good test-takers probably went out of their way to sit for a test. This would skew the test results higher.

Commander nom means you're pretty much in, but that ACT to me says that you're gonna probably struggle academically and will probs get prep school first.
