Hey all, I'm a rising senior in high school and will be applying for the October ROTC board. I read that last year, only candidates with a 3.9 UW gpa were awarded scholarships, and the site says a 2.5 minimum. For reference, I have a 3.73 gpa and pretty good test scores. Do I have any chance at all?

Yes you have a chance.

My DS had about the same grades as you, but only fair test scores. He entered Army ROTC as a walk-on (non-contract) cadet and quickly earned a 3.5 year scholarship. He commissioned in 2019, and is now an Abrams platoon leader with a combat tour under his belt. He is approaching time for the Captains Career Course.

Navy, Army, Air Force.....all of them?

If Navy, submit the strongest package you can.....or in other words, don't aim for a specific board.

There are hundreds of posts on what makes a package stronger. One statistic is never wrong.......100% of people who did not apply were not selected. 😏

Yes, you have a chance. More than GPA goes into the decision, just make sure you are as strong as you can be in other areas. Also, remember that Campus based scholarships are available if you perform well while in college.

We were told that the more well rounded application, the better. They look at GPA, test scores, athletics participation, leadership, work experience, extracurricular involvement, and I am sure other things that aren't top of mind right now.

Very possible. I had a 3.3 and won a National scholarship last year. Try hard to raise your GPA but be well rounded, be defined as more than student with a high GPA. And the board considers the difficultly level of the classes you take to get that GPA.

Good Luck!! Work hard!

If Army ROTC...This is what we learned last year: Don't rush to get in the October board. They award relatively few scholarships on the first board (they are all 4 year). When you submit it should be the absolute best it can be (PT scores, SAT/ACT scores). My son had a high GPA, only ok test scores, and solid leadership experience and he was awarded a 3 year from the January board (they award both 3 and 4 year at this and the 3rd board). Work to max out those PT scores! Good luck!

Average GPA of winners was about 3.6. Nobody knows your odds, as we don't know what you will score on the PMS interview and CBEF. Bomb either of those, and you won't' get a scholarship regardless of GPA or ACT/SAT scores. Also, extracurricular activities and sports affect your chances.

Apply, and prepare for the interview.

You definitely have a chance! Your GPA isn't the only deciding factor when awarding National ROTC scholarships.

I had a 3.4 GPA and got a four-year scholarship. Practice your SAT, get a job, work out, and walk into the interview with confidence and composure.
