Hello, I am a sophomore in South Jersey and have wanted to go to a United States Service Academy since I was very little. I have been trying to build the best application I can possibly put forth. I am wandering what type of extracurricular or curricular activities I can participate in that can help me stand out over all my competitors. Thank You.

First, I like your statement, as it indicates your have had the SA desire for sometime now. It's fine to ask how to make you stand out...but keep in mind, whatever you do for extra cariccula activities, it should be for the fun/expierence in things you like. OK, so successful candidates to the SA's vary in their total profile quite a bit. Heres some general advice: take hard courses (Pre-AP, AP, Honors, etc). Try to get as much AP math and science as you can (3 or 4 lab sciences are good), Calculus A, B, statistics. Talk to your teachers about how you can do better, ask for their advice. Help other students, particiapate in sports, Varsity is good. Its generally better to stick with one or two sports than to do a few. Seek and leadership opportunities in ECAs, sports, etc. Find a community service org. that you would like to volunteer in. If your in Scouts...continue, if not thats ok. Most of all try to have fun, stay fit. There is debate as to when to reach out to your favorite SA RC or BGO etc. My opinion is that it doesn't hurt to do it early. others will have good advise. Nice job!

Be yourself. Find 1-2 things you are passionate about and have all of your extra curriculars revolve around them. For me it was law enforcement and education advocacy. All of my extra-curriculars revolved around those two topics and I could talk for HOURS about them. I didn’t do Boy Scouts. I didn’t do boys state. I didn’t do NHS. If NHS or Boys state really interests you, then do it. If not, don’t feel like you have to. To me, I only saw them as “resume fillers” not stuff I was genuinely passionate about.

I am an applicant for the class of 2025 and just like you, I knew I wanted to attend a SA since I was around 8.

I didn’t do anything “special”. I just prepared for what I knew what would be asked of me at the academy. I prepared physically, academically, and got into the mindset of being a leader always.

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

One thing would be to get a practical internship and/or job experience over the Summer in something you’re interested in. I had 2 recommendations from physicians that I shadowed and whose teams I also worked with.
