I was thrilled today to receive a picture of my DS taking his oath of enlistment at his college where he just started with AFROTC. :D😍

That got me wondering.... does his 20 year commitment towards retirement begin today, or does that start in 4 years when he commissions?

It starts when he reports for active duty after commissioning.

ADSD. Active duty service date.
DOR. Date of rank. Often differs and will change with each rank.
PEBD. Pay Entry Base Date.
Commissioning date - I don’t know if I’ve seen any acronyms for that. There probably is one.

The 20 year counter will vary across commissioning sources. Those will prior enlisted service will usually already have a head start on their counter.

In my case, ADSD and PEBD were the same, as I reported directly for active duty as an officer candidate, with AD salary and benefits. Four months later, I was commissioned, closing out OC AD time and commencing AD officer time. My retirement counter started on the day I reported.

Your son will soon learn all the different statuses. He can then explain to you until your eyes glaze over, especially if he loads you up with acronyms. 🤣

I am hoping that my DD gets a picture taken tomorrow when she has hers.
