I understand applications open next month. My son is definitely interested in applying for an AFROTC scholarship but considering other branches also. When would he need to have his applications in to be considered by the first boards. He is retaking SATS in June and taking ACT for the first time in June also. If he waits for those scores will he still be good, or should he apply as soon as the process opens and then update his scores later?
Thanks!

First boards vary by service. Navy boards generally start in September. Marines only have two boards, late autumn and early spring. Don't know when AFROTC boards are held but I'm sure someone will chime in. You can find AROTC board dates here: https://goldenknightbattalion.wordpress.com/

As far as I know he can always submit updated SAT/ACT scores for Navy. Check the blof above for Army info.

Here are the dates for the Army ROTC boards https://goldenknightbattalion.wordpress.com/2016/05/24/board-dates-2016-2017-scholarship-boards/

Basically you have the summer to get everything done for all the ROTC programs. A complete package in early/mid Sept should be good for all the first boards. Remember your DS does not control the entire process. Officer interviews, Letters of reccomendations (LOR), and guidance counselor reccomendations could be a challenge to get completed during the summer.

Oops sorry for the double post of @clarksonarmy link.

Thanks for the feedback and great point in teachers recommendations. His teachers have inservice days the week of August 22nd so they should at least be available for him to contact them. It's going to be really tough for him to get anything before the end of the school year since his school will basically be done by the time the applications open.

On the NROTC Navy option side, if he has his application completely submitted by late August, he has a solid chance of making the first scholarship board. An applicant can send in updated SAT/ACT scores after their application has been submitted.
