Hello guys! Happy New Year in advance and I wish u all hear some good news from your chosen college!

I applied as a transfer to VMI and this isn't my first time applying. I went there for an interview on Dec 15 and pretty much turned in my application as RD by hand. The admission officer was really nice, said everything is good and asked me if i wanna do band in VMI and gave some head up on future preparation to make and so on. I sent out my supplement material via email on 22, but they haven't replied yet, probably bc of holiday I assume. I remember he said I have a big chance to get in and it may take a few weeks to receive the letter in like Feb? Anyway how long does it take you to hear from them? I am still super excited like a little boy lol cant wait to head back home to check my mail box

Hope I will see u guys on the matriculation day!

VMI 2022 - I think those that applied "Early Decision" have now heard if they have been accepted, and many of the "top ranked" candidates (those with SA quality records) that applied "Regular Decision" have started hearing from VMI. Appointment offers will continue in a rolling manner from now through the summer. Best wishes and good luck on being appointed to "one of 500".

Also, it is currently Christmas Furlough until January 10, so not likely to hear before mid-January, but staff may still be working starting after New Year's Day.

If I recall my DS applied in December 2014 and heard in January 2015. I know he knew by the beginning of February because he did an overnight on President's Day and had already heard.

I don't know when VMI stops sending notifications of admission, but I do understand that they're still rolling out.

The ED kids I know have already heard where they stand, and I was sent my offer around mid-November (didn't expect it because I applied RD).

I recently got a letter in the mail reminding me to accept or decline my offer. It arrived right before Christmas. I'm letting you know this to make sure you understand that VMI Admissions and other college Admissions committees take different "days off" than we do. For example, they might only take Christmas Eve, Christmas, and New Year's Eve off, but we might get 3 whole weeks away from school. Not sure when VMI Admissions meets, but again:

All colleges work at their own pace. I'm sure you'll hear soon.

    Good luck!

Competition for entering VMI in recent years has been very tight. They will keep sending notifications of appointment until they fill the class, right up until just before matriculation day if necessary. Typically around 2000 completed applications are submitted each year and VMI expects between 490-500 to enter each year.

I've seen on-line here and in other places that some folk think VMI is an easy school to get into since its acceptance rate is around 40-50%. First off, 40-50% isn't all that "easy." It means 60-50% that apply don't get in. This perception of an "easy" 50% acceptance rate comes from the historical stats that shows VMI gets 1900-2000 applications each year and then makes ~900-1000 appointment offers to fill their 500 slots. If VMI were to calculate its acceptance rate the way the Service Academies do (10,000 completed applications with 1200 accepted = 12% acceptance rate), then the VMI acceptance rate would be closer to 25%.

The VMI acceptance rate statistics hides the real difficulty of entry. First, there are only 500 slots for entry each year. While VMI may make 1000 offers they don't make them all at once since they can only fill 500 slots. They have to make the appointment offers in a "rolling admissions" fashion so they don't bust their 500 cap. They start by making offers to the applicants with the best all-around records. Many of those folks are also competitive applicants to the Service Academies. So those applicants will accept the VMI appointment early (in December through February), and then cancel late in the process (April thru June) when and if a Service Academy appointment comes through. What's my point -- if your record is "competitive" for gaining a Service Academy appointment, or a national ROTC scholarship, your chances for getting into VMI are very good and you will most likely get an early offer. If your record is "average" or less, getting offered one of the 500 slots may come late in the process.

For all that want to attend VMI and have applied . . . hang in there! . . . and best wishes to you for wanting to pursue a challenging path!

Yeah that's what I was wondering, the furlough probably make the waiting slightly longer than usual. And the admission officer just replied and said will get in touch shortly so I assume everything is going well! Thank you!

For some reason, I was blessed and West Point decided to pitch me an LOA. I have everything done but am being patient, as I do not have my offer from them yet and could be waiting for a month or two. Going to see how things pan out before I accept or decline my VMI offer.

Sounds like you're a bit more used to waiting than I am. I wish I had your patience! It comes with time.

That's real awesome! Not everyone can have the chance to be a West Pointer either. If I don't see ya at VMI, all the best at USMA!

And yeah better get used to waiting lol it's too common. May our path crosses in the Army one day!

    Falcon A,

Just to add on to your tidbit about VMI's acceptance rate, getting into VMI as an out of state applicant is even more difficult given that "VMI has a goal that no more than 45 percent of cadets come from outside Virginia".

I got that information from Wikipedia if you were wondering - might not be the most accurate information but oh well!

I do not know the actual percentage but I do know that they are required to have a majority of the accepted students need to be from Virginia, so that would up the difficulty some for out of state applicants.
