Where to view grades?

To my knowledge grades are not a part of that release permission. The grade/class info is contained within the USMA computer network. CIS, I believe.

Never saw any of my two cadets grades while at WP. I'm not even sure what their class rank actually was.

With all due respect, why not just ask him? Not trying to tell you how to parent. But I respectfully suggest that this could be a way to help build the adult-to-adult relationship, i.e. let him tell you instead of you looking over his shoulder.

This period of time is not only a significant transition for the midshipman as a young active duty adult headed out on their life journey, but for parents accustomed to knowing most of the everyday details of a beloved child’s life. The burden of responsibility and accountability for performance now sits squarely on the mid’s shoulders, to share or not as they wish. This is a good thing, as the family dynamics shift to welcome a same-but-new adult operating within shifting boundaries. As I left for college, my mom told me she’d be happy to share any good news or bad news I had, whenever I chose to share, and left it at that.

We’ve also seen an apt phrase here on SAF, when a parent notes they are transitioning from active parenting to remote consulting.

I apologize for using “midshipman” and “mid” in the USMA forum. Muscle memory. Cadet, of course. Same thoughts.

DS showed us some of his Calc. and English essay grades but other than that he doesn't say much. Even in high school he never said much and although I could go into his portal and check his grades and his grades were good he never felt the need to tell us. I guess no news is good news.

I didn’t know that parents had the option to see their Cadets grades. All I knew about DS grades was what he told me. Some high some low and some struggles. He chose Engineering. He dug deeper than he ever had to before, but he figured it out.
Then he graduated…..

No news is good news!! So true. I was just telling ds that I don't think I ever shared my grades with my parents when I was at USAFA nor did they ask other than, "how are your classes?"

I never asked (DD, USMMA) her grades. (Unlike the other 2) She once told me she got a ** on a test, a really good result. "I wanted to do better but I lost some study time helping a classmate, just as someone had helped me before another test. That's what we do here."

You cannot view their grades. Further, the report cards stopped being mailed home in Spring 2016.
What it means is that if he is failing out, you have permission to talk to the Registrar. You should save that until your kid is failing out and you don't know what to do. Let's hope it never comes to that.
However, it is college...you don't have Power School or anything like that. You have to make the leap of faith that everything is ok.

Also, I had a kid who did fail out & then fought his way back in & has been on the dean's list ever since his return...He knows how uptight I am about his grades--because we both suffered--so that at the end of the term he will text me a screen shot of his grades or when he hops into the car with me or arrives home say, 'I made the Dean's List again'...and that is all I need to know. The bit about needing a 2.0 to graduate is real....but they don't really need a 2.0 the entire time...they can drift above and below...if your kid fails a bunch of classes, send me a DM and we can chat about how that works w/ the Academic Board. No sense dwelling on it if you are simply curious but don't have a reason to suspect your kid is failing.
