Who is the BEST Rock group of our generation?

The Eagles were prolific. My wife's 2nd favorite, after Aerosmith.

For me, it has always been The Beatles. My brothers went to the Beatles concert (Shea Stadium), but I was too young.

No contest: Lynyrd Skynyrd. Had they not been tragically decimated in the plane crash, they would have gone down as the greatest of all time.

Even my oldest (a musician), who disagrees with everything I say, has agreed they wrote possibly the top 2 rock songs (albeit, Southern rock) of all time.
The boys are from the capital of southern rock, Jacksonville, Florida. The west side of Jax to be more specific.

Well geez....this is tough for an old guy...

Growing up in the UK in the 60's....well, it had to be The Beatles (although I also like Hermans' Hermits, Zager & Evans, The Beach Boys, The Byrds, Hendrix, The Mama's and the Papa's...yeah, I was a jukebox nut as a kid). Of course, moving to the USA...in the 70s...again, it's tough...you have so many outstanding bands: Boston, Kiss (Yes, really), Zeppelin, Skynard, Neil Young, AC/DC, and of course, Queen...I'd have to pick Queen. The 80s? Oh geez...again...Van Halen, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Journey, Aerosmith, Twisted Sister, Quiet Riot, ZZ Top...decisions...a toss-up between Van Halen and Def Leppard. The 90s...I don't care, I started to get old...

At least, that's what my cadets tell me.

Of course. The answer to Neil Young's Southern Man. He and Ronnie Van Zant did make peace between them.

Nothing wrong with Gimme Three Steps or anything from the Allman Brothers.
...and the list could go on.

For anybody who grew up in the 70's, YouTube Lynyrd Skynyrd Free Bird from Oakland Coliseum from July 2, 1977. First, you will see what a GREAT band and group of well-rehearsed musicians/performers they were. Second, you will see a great representation of the 70's...none of the kids are holding cell-phones, lot's of long hair and halter tops, everybody looks really laid back (stoned, maybe), and really just rock and roll in its purest form. I wish my kids had more experiences like this...well mostly...

Obviously, inappropriate to have the Confederate Flag in the background in today's context, but times were very different then.

@TexasAggie204 You can tell it was another age just by the stage dressing. Sure bands have played before fake Mt Rushmore before, but if you jump to the finale around 10:30 you can see the nice ferns and fresh flowers along the front edge of the stage, at a rock concert, in a stadium.

although I also like Hermans' Hermits

Love Peter Noone. He's still performing, and I've seen him here in AZ twice in the past 10-15 years. Compared to other rockers, he's aging beautifully. :)

I also love the Bee Gees. Best genetically engineered harmonies ever. It doesn't get any better than the 1976 Barry Gibb. Swoon.

All good choices but the Beatles are hard to beat. Every song is different but recognizable at once. And as far as a decent guitar player with an ok voice, I'd vote for Jimmy Buffett and the songs I know by heart. Who needs a margarita?

I've seen JB a handful of times. Once in Hawaii long before he became sober. Once at Universal in Orlando. My fam and I heard music so walked around the corner in one of the movie set streets and Buffett was doing a video with a bunch of girls and a python. Very cool.

1- Aerosmith (just my personal preference)
2- Eagles/Skynard/Queen (like them all)
3- Love to hear Eric Clapton play the guitar

On a side note, the best concert I have ever been to in person was Phil Collins. He played/sang for almost 5 hours with a 15-minute intermission.

Consider that the Beatles were only a band for about 8 years & didn't play live for their last 3 years. Yet what an output of tremendous music!

In comparison, the Rolling Stones have been a band for, what, 60 years? Great band, but pretty much playing same old stuff for the last 40 years or so.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.

I've seen em 12 times, first in 1984.
No show like it.
Epic

Would Springsteen be considered more of an individual act than a band? Don't get me wrong, Clarence "the Big Man" Clemmons & Stevie Van Zandt were great, but E Street has always been in the shadow of the Boss. People get excited about seeing "Bruce!" Not the (albeit essential part of the act) "E Street Band".

This isn't a knock against the non-Boss band members but more of a realisation that E Street is/was the Boss's backup players.

Bob Dylan, Elvis Presley, David Bowie, etc. all had bands but will always be remembered as essentially solo acts.

Other great bands were always more of a collaborative effort. Beatles songs were Lennon-MCCartney scripted, for the most part. Led Zeppelin was equal parts Page, Bonham, Jones & Plant. Even US was not dominated by Bono. Beach Boys were heavily Brian Wilson, but they weren't known as Brian's band & had decent success without him.

As I recall from reading a biography of Lynyrd Skynyrd the use of the Rebel flag as a background to the band was the idea of their music label, not the band. But, yes, use of that flag was not very controversial in the 1970s - at least to white people.

I have to go with Rush from my childhood and Guns and Roses from my young adult life.
