Will getting a Senator nomination help me get a better chance at admissions?

I didn't receive a congressional nomination but got a Senator nomination instead. Am I at a disadvantage if I don't have a congressional nomination as well?

You only need 1 nom, any flavor, plus be fully qualified to be in the running for an appointment. More are better, because then USNA has more flexibility as to where to charge an appointment should they offer you one, which is why they encourage applicants to apply for all for which they are eligible.

There is absolutely nothing you can do about this, so invest the mental energy elsewhere. Rejoice in the nom you have, stay positive, tend other plans, go PT, enjoy family and friends. And consider this, some other applicant could have 4 noms, and not be as well-qualified as you or be deemed fully qualified.

The fact that you received a Senator’s nomination would most likely indicate that you are among the top Midshipman Candidates in your state. Where you are on that slate is unknown. Make of that what you will, but don’t stress so much about it. With regards to nominations, you’ve done the best you can, now is time for you to wait and see.

It depends on where you rank on the slate in the view of USNA. Some might assume that a SEN slate is always the more competitive but that's not necessarily the case. The reason is that Senators typically select nominees from throughout the state. So, if your REP district is hyper-competitive but the rest of your state is much less competitive, you might rank higher on an SEN slate than if you'd received a nom from your Rep. Conversely, if you live in a less-competitive district in a very competitive state, you might do better on the REP slate.

I live in Washington State if that helps. I believe over 200 apply for the senator nomination.

2 months of torture to see if I get accepted or not :(
…or more! My youngest was a May appointment. Best thing to do, is to get excited about your alternate plans. Plan your dorm. Get a sweatshirt. Focus on other things besides the wait. But be present in your last k-12 academic career with your friends and family!

Yes indeed! even though I got Noms from my MOC & Senator, I applied for NROTC & AFROTC scholarships (got the NROTC last week) and a bunch of colleges, backup plans, backup plans and backup plans my friends..................
I applied to both as well. I didn't do an interview yet. My interview is scheduled next week for AFROTC. I haven't heard back from NROTC as I turned it in a few days ago.

That's great, good luck! You'll have to find out when the boards meet. So, I had my AFROTC interview last November, the board met January 17th, results will be released first week of March. Navy was about the same time frame, however they obviously released results sooner. Timing is everything with this, you may possibly get an answer from a Service Academy before ROTC.

My DS did the same, he got the NROTC national scholarship fast, waiting to hear from AFROTC, he also heard from several schools.

Congrats!👍 Let's see what happens with the AFROTC. The NROTC is the full package, which is awesome, the AFROTC can award 4,3,2,1-year scholarships, in both our cases, the AFROTC would have to be nothing less than the full Tier 1 to be comparable to the NROTC. Also, as you may or may not know, whether Navy or Air Force, full scholarships do not cover room & board, however, the college has the discretion to offer the R&B, I received notice yesterday that a college I applied to said if I choose their school, they will supplement the NROTC scholarship and pay for my R&B, so tempting. In the meantime, just waiting for a decision to pop up on my SA portal.

Do they let you have a choice to pay for housing and room only? I know for the army does.

Yes i believe he picked schools that would basically complement the nrotc and afrotc.

For some reason both USNA and NROTC offered him academy and scholarship very fast but he hasn't heard anything from the air force side. He wants to wait to have all responses to make his decision. He hasnt told us (even thou he did say will take academies over ivy schools and rotc) and we want to have 0 influence over any academy as he is the one doing the work and the time. Whatever he chooses we will be happy with.

He did love his visit at USNA last weekend and said he likes how they days are scheduled etc

Yes, the USNA visit was great, loved Annapolis. The final decision won't be easy, Ivy ROTC or Academy, but you are totally correct, whatever decision we all make, it will be great in the end.
