There are so many permutations of today’s word that, once the pattern is established, it is just luck to pick correctly before your tries run out. Just lucky today.

Partly. But the one letter she got, left only a couple of possible choices for letter 5. Once you plug that in, there are only very few possibilities for the word.

My problem is that with only one letter, I would not even think to try to guess or figure it out. I would just go on and do another line or two.
 
There are actually several hundred possible words that would work; the limiting factors of those options being the letters that were excluded following the first guess.

Regardless, I stand by my original statement. The person was very lucky.
