2016 USNA Mailbox Stalkers Club...

Got my TWE today, not waitlisted or anything, outright denied- pity if not for my senior grades... but its not the last theyv'e seen of me. does anyone know if NROTC has an SMP program with marine/navy reserves like with army rotc and guard/reserve for the army?

Not that I know of, which is different from saying they don't. Everyone in NROTC commisions AD, unlike army. There are other paths to commisioning besides NROTC. Marines have the Platoon Leaders Course and I'm pretty sure Navy has a commissioning program outside of ROTC.

Connecticut

Anyone else out there from CT, I have seen very, very few from Connecticut and I am still waiting - stalking - checking....

A couple of days ago, pretty much everyone from my school and the neigboring schools and communities got letters in the mail saying that they were waitlisted. The only two people who didnt get these letters we me and another kid at my school. From what it seems, we generally have better grades and test scores than the kids who recieved the letters so i doubt that we got flat out denied. I was wondering if they send waitlisted notifications out first and that maybe its a sign that me and my friend got it if they send out acceptance letters later or maybe if we just got pushed to another pool of applicants. What do you guys think?

Thanks

TX 3

I was wondering the same thing. I keep thinking no news is good news. Wouldn't you think if you have not received a TWE or a waitlist letter that you are still in the running?

DS received a TWE yesterday (MD-03). He'd already commited to the CGA though.

Texas District 3

We still have not received anything in the mail, but I finally broke down and emailed the BGO again. He said that no one from our District received an appointment and two were waitlisted to NAPS- my DS is not one of those and would not have taken NAPS. Just to put it out there for those still waiting and because I know I would want this info- My son's STATs for what they are worth

3.94 weighted GPA 3.46 unweighted 9 AP courses included AP BC Calculus ranked 65/546 3 Varsity letters (not a recruited athelete) nearly maxed the CFA in very windy and rainy conditions after wrestling practice and coming back from a concussion- plenty of leadership and volunteer ACT M 32 E 29 SAT 670/670 and for those of you that think minorities get a break- put an end to that rumor.... He is Hispanic. I thought he was a strong candidate with a little lower GPA as freshman year was an adjustment but in the end... all of the above and minority= no appointment.
Those are my facts- good luck to all who have not heard. On to plan B NROTC Marine Corps Scholarship- glad to have it!!!

TWE, but still a Midshipman

DD received a TWE this afternoon; but that's okay. She earned a four-year Navy option ROTC scholarship to Purdue Univ in January. Hats off to the kids who've been offered an appointment. They'll all be one Navy in four years.

Sorry to hear that 2016Texas, but so happy for you that DS has NROTC Marine Corps Scholarship:smile:
As we have discussed before there doesn't seem to be rhyme or reason sometimes as to why one is chosen over another. There seems to be a criteria and then a sub-criteria only known to admissions. Annapolis is a political hot bed and the Academy sits on it's waterfront. Once the legacy appointments are done, principal political noms, napsters, the athletes (after all it is Div 1) then making sure the class this year is 50% male and 50% female, where is the room for anyone else with reduced class sizes? A tall order in this economy!
I tell my DS.. you don't always get what you want...sometimes you get something better!!!
Moving on, hopefully we will talk again:shake:Good luck!

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words. He wants to be a Marine so now that is solidified without having to hope for it at USNA. Plus I get to keep him a little longer this summer. It will all be okay- just a little irritated that it took them this long to say no and actually we still have no TWE- it's April 4th- they could have walked it to Texas by now!!! Good luck to all still waiting. If you get really antsy, just tell the BGO you want the news... good or bad. Ours told us and sent a very nice email about my son. Made me feel good.

I love your statement: "You don't always get what you want...sometimes you get something better!"

Guess what 2016TEXAS, your DS NROTC Application status just updated to say the following:

Selection Status
Congratulations!
You have been selected for a 4-yr Marine Option scholarship.
Your scholarship has been placed at UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN. Your host unit will be UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN.

...yes it's me your honey badger, father of a Wolverine and future Marine.

I also received a TWE-wait list here in NJ. This was my second time applying, but I received a full appointment to USCGA! I elected to stay on the wait list, but I think given this year, chances are slim.

Nonetheless, proud to carry on the family tradition of being a Coastie :thumb:! For those who receive the TWE...reapply if USXA is your dream! Get good grades and keep your nose clean.

Wow. Congratulations to all of those who have received appointments so far. Looks like a lot of people have already been informed about their status regarding appointments/waitlisting/TWE... I'm a candidate for USAFA C/O 2016 and it has been rather dry regarding news. I too am anxiously waiting.... Best of luck to all of you! :thumb:

There seems to be a criteria and then a sub-criteria only known to admissions.

With that I wholeheartedly agree.

Once the legacy appointments are done, principal political noms, napsters, the athletes (after all it is Div 1) then making sure the class this year is 50% male and 50% female

Sorry, but can't let this pass. Legacy candidates get no breaks. If you don't believe me, ask the MANY, MANY grads whose kids with multiple noms are turned down every year. Happened to quite a few of my classmates. The SAs are not like civilian schools re legacies. BTW, I'm not suggesting that if your mom or dad is SecDef or SecNav, you won't have an advantage. However, the average son or daughter of an alum gets no more benefit than a non-legacy kid who was team captain or did any number of other things.

If, by "principal political noms," you mean principal MOC noms . . . well, someone from each slate will get the appointment. If the MOC wants to dictate who it will be by making a principal nom, that's their choice. USNA has no say in the matter -- they must take that nominee if qualified. If you're suggesting politics plays a role or that nepotism remains, I've never seen evidence of it -- and that includes my own nom from an MOC my parents were working to unseat.

No question that SOME recruited varsity athletes have an advantage. However, again, I've seen more than my share get turndowns. One of my appointees is a recruited major sport athlete but he is also incredibly academically well qualified -- and I do mean incredibly.

As for the dig at females, the percentage of females is around 22% and fluctuates between 20% and 24%. Admissions are gender-blind and have been for more than a decade. What that means is that USNA doesn't consider gender in making admissions decisions, so women have no advantage or disadvantage vs. men. IOW, if USNA takes the best candidates, regardless of gender, they'll get the percentage of women they want for each class.

This is a very sensitive -- and, in some cases -- discouraging time for many on this site. Many, many great young men and women are getting TWEs and no one but folks in Admissions knows why. Comments such as yours really don't help anyone.
