Army ROTC 3rd Board Results...

My DD was awarded a 4yr on the third board to Georgetown, Villanova, and TCU. She has been accepted to all three ( nursing major if this changes anyone’s mind). She is visiting Villanova next week in person, Gtown isn’t meeting in person, and we aren’t sure we can get to TCU before this decision needs to be made ( she is meeting with both GTown and TCU virtually). Any thoughts on any of these programs? All are great schools and all great schools for her major. Any insight would be appreciated!
DS chose TCU. We visited all 3 of those schools and all are great choices. TCU will be in person next year. Their ROTC classes and training were in person all year, and I expect that will be the same next year. TCU has amazing school spirit and sense of community and Fort Worth is a great town. The campus facilities are top notch and students get into all sporting events for free. Also, if your DS scored over 28 on ACT (or some equivalent on SAT) room and board are FREE.

I would say they held the standard. 10s of 100,000s figured out how to take the test.
What a pretty F'd up thing to say, especially coming from a school ROTC. We live in a liberal state, surrounded by other liberal states, all of which were shut down completely for a long time due to COVID. I tried to schedule him for the SAT numerous times, and each time we recieved an email that it was cancelled. I was willing to take time off work and drive to another state to get him the SAT. The kid had a 1120 score on his PSAT a couple years ago. He would have done great on the SAT. He should not have been penalized and held back from his dream because some liberal freaking governors couldn't figure out a way to open the schools or get the kids the testing they needed. So no, I don't think "the standard" was upheld.

You’ve entered the land of straight talk with this forum. I can assure you that @Montana State Army ROTC is one of the many good guys here. And yes, he calls it like he sees it. Sorry about your son’s predicament. That’s tough - in a tough year for all our kids.

If someone declines a 4 year scholarship before May 1 does it go to the next person on the list?

No - declined scholarships are not returned to the pool. The Army (and other branches) have a good idea about the number of applicants that will accept or decline a scholarship offer. You are either offered a scholarship or not, there is no trickle down of offers based on declines. Good luck!

I agree that @Montana State Army ROTC is a huge asset to SAF - for our family for sure. I do also understand @SMArnold2 ’s frustration. If you are in a locked down state, good luck getting an SAT/ACT completed. You honestly have to travel out of state to do it - sometimes thousands of miles. It’s a state graduation requirement in IL. Despite the lack of creativity on behalf of our “Governor” to make sure these seniors have any kind of a school year, the “Governor” left it up to the schools to figure out how to get the test done. “I will shut down the state indefinitely but not adjust graduation requirements.” 🙄. We are your average family but I know our school district is considered “wealthy” & they figured it out. So....all kids in our district have at least one score. *But* I have no idea if all districts were able to pull it off. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I know first hand of kids who showed up to their site to get the test cancelled the day off - no warning. So if a kid didn’t have a second one scheduled they were out of luck. Yes, their parents could schedule 1/2 dozen test dates, hoping one sticks (I know some who did that) but many don’t have the resources to do that.... our son got a 2nd one in - by chance, he scheduled it an even wealthier district - we knew they wouldn’t cancel because the parents of that district would have lost their minds, but the majority of the locations in our state canceled on that Saturday.... so yes, I understand the sentiment, if there is a will, there is a way (I’m surprised The College Board didn’t file a restraining order against us 😉) but man, if you live in an area where college is NOT a priority w/in a locked down state, I honestly don’t know how some of these kids could get it done ✅....

As far as the SAT/ACT. We are talking the Graduating class of 2021. I bet kids (mine included) were boarded with scores from 2019. I feel for kids with the 998, but at the same time I applaud the kids that were forward thinking in practicing their tests and seeing what their baseline was at. I am sure for some it was the difference.

It wasn't a priority in our state because the State colleges waived the SAT requirement. My son took PSATs and was scheduled for an SAT spring of 2020. That was cancelled. I tried numerous times to schedule him since then and all have been cancelled. I even tried in our surrounding states. Stupid liberal left coast doesn't care how this impacted students. I wish sending in PSAT scores had been an option for the scholarship. He would have had a better score than the minimum they assigned him.

I agree - the politicians had a narrow view & I don’t think recognized the cascading affect this had on the class of 2021. And, it’s hard for folks who don’t live in a locked down state to understand just how bad it is - just like I can’t fathom the liberties Floridians have 😉....It honestly changed the trajectory for some of these kids. I know the kids who want to serve will do well wherever they go -we just have to somehow move past what a dumpster fire the school year & college application process was for them. We are still waiting on NROTC & USNA news but DS is all set to start life as a College Programmer @ Plan B. Plan B NROTC program has been great - they are set to help him get the scholarship/advanced standing, if needed.

Excellent point. My DD did receive a 3 yr scholarship but if I knew the process like I do today, I would have put her on a plane and had her test. Missing that test is costing me 1st year tuition and room and board. That's what you get for living in a state like CA.

Room and board was gonna cost no matter what unless you chose the scholarship to cover room and board. It’s full tuition OR room and board

I don't think @Montana State Army ROTC was being flippant in his response. I think his response was that the Army was able to uphold the rigors of selection due to the fact that the majority of the candidates were able to submit test scores. As the candidates were Boarded and scored, the ones that posted test scores above the 998 were obviously scored higher in that category. It wouldn't be fair to not take that into account for the students who had a complete application. Unfortunate but not unfair. It has also been reported that a number of scholarships were awarded to students that were unable to test. I know that many Universities and Colleges are shying away from standardized testing. The military loves standardized testing as a whole and I don't see this changing, so future candidates need to take that into account.

As has been stated, there are many other avenues for your son to commission. The majority of scholarship dollars are distributed as campus based scholarships. One thing you may want to consider is having your DS go ahead and try and take the ACT/SAT this summer and fall. If he could post a good core, his chances of a 3-YR campus based scholarship would go up. Don't give up, there are many ways to get to a commission. Good luck and sorry about the circumstances surrounding the testing.

Not for the school my DD is attending. Private Univ that pays room and board for all contracted ROTC.
Yes, 4 year award triggers R&B at our private U as well.

We were just fortunate to schedule tests early. (late fall and last one in Jan.) Actually got one SAT and two ACT in before everything started cancelling a year or so ago.

The Army is bigger than any one individual. For every student unable to take it there were 2-3 fully qualified who did. Sorry your DS didn’t get a scholarship but so didn’t hundreds if not 1000s of others. So like them, have your DS show up on campus and bust his but to earn a scholarship on merit- like the vast majority of cadets.

Not to stir the pot any more than it already has been...

Lots of people earn on campus scholarships. Not uncommon at all. And a LOT of people get a 3 year AD, so they don't even get the scholarship their first year!

We all took sacrifices this year. I didn't have a normal graduation, prom, and I lost several people dear to me from COVID. Yes, what happened is unfortunate. Doesn't change the current situation, because we can't change the past.

Hope your son goes in with a chip on his shoulder so he can earn a campus based scholarship. Best of luck to him!

The PMS for my son's school of choice told him that there were very few scholarships handed out to applicants that did not have an SAT/ACT. Fortunately, he also has expressed that he really wants my son as part of his program and intends to award him a scholarship. It doesn't take away from the fact that kids were hurt by the lack of SAT/ACT testing availability. Maybe thats not the Army's problem, but it doesn't make it any less disappointing.

DS got the same email last week. I had heard this could happen, but that it was uncommon. What a major blessing!
Yes!!!! I was shocked! I was counting my blessings after the second board with the 3 year. And DS sends me a TEXT with the screen shot of the upgrade to 4 year. “I knew you’d start crying again” he tells me! SO unexpected and feeling so grateful! Congrats to all
