C/O 2019 Mailbox Stalkers

I respect everyone on this forum but I find it a bit erry that the majority of responses are from parents. Being a child from an anti-military family that was a bit reluctant to help me with the application process I have an entirely different view. From going to my MOC nominee reception and other things like that it seems like some parents care more about the service academies than their kids. Can someone please shed some light on this? Since this forum seems to be about informing others about your situation so you can better predict yours I will share a bit about myself. I am an Eagle Scout, member of OA, have been Scout of the Year and Patrol Leader of the Year aswell as SPL of my troop. My troop has almost 80 members and has been a unit of excellence for over twenty consecutive years so it is a handful. I have a varsity letter in wrestling and am also on the "competitive" as opposed to "development" team of my school's ultimate frisbee which is taken fairly seriously in my area. I am class rank 28 of 340 at a public high school (not magnet or charter or anything) and my school has produced 7 ivy leaguers, 1 U Chicago, 3 Duke and a morehead-cain scholar through early decision and action alone so it is one of the more competitive public high schools. My SAT scores are 720 reading and 770 math. I have taken many AP classes and well over a dozen honors classes including Calc BC and AP Chem. I am Vice President of French club and a member of several other clubs and have over 100 hours of volunteering through varying activities. I am triple qualified and have a nomination but have no heard anything yet through the mail or my MOC. I live in NC.
I'm in the same boat....

Question real quick:

Does USNA send out TWE's/BFE's in waves/certain times of the year or is it mainly dependent on when your application was submitted? Mine was submitted in October and I was nominated in December.

Yes, why are the parents more invested in the application process than the children? Are most of the children who apply to service academies guided into it because of their parents? Are the rest of my fellow applicants acting independently or out of an obligation to please parents and relatives who are former service members or alumnus?
Walterd....Let me give you my two cents on why that is to your questions. I am currently active in the US Navy going on 23 years. My DS has been a Navy brat ever since he was born and have seen the many phases of being a military child. Whether it be me being gone on numerous deployments, moving from state to state, or just the military life in general he has seen and experienced it all. I did not, at any point, asked him if he would follow my footsteps. I did, however, provided guidance and set examples so that he may succeed in his adult life. When he decided that he wanted to serve his country by way of applying to USNA I was ecstatic. I knew he had a shot at being competitive and more so on getting an appointment because I have seen throughout my career what it takes to be a leader. He has the honor, the courage, and the commitment. So to answer all your questions, as a parent I will do EVERYTHING to support my DS to reach his goal. This includes investing my time, energy, and emotions in the application process from cradle to grave whether he gets the TWE or the BFE. And I'm happy to say that he has an LOA and we are awaiting the BFE. So am I'm sure most of the parents that are posting here share the same interests in the outcome of the process. Although we don't know each other personally on this forum we support each other for the best interest of our DS or DD application process. We even share the emotional portion. That's how strong we are connected and involved as parents of USNA hopefuls.

For me whether I am pro or anti military has nothing to do with my involvement. It all has to do with (hopefully) watching my son's dream come true or being there for him if it doesn't.

I come here to learn, but I believe for many of us that have watched our children pour themselves into the application process, it has become somewhat of a "support group".

No one else in my son's school has applied and at times I feel like I am on an island. No one else gets what I have watched my son do to get to this point. Everyone else has made school decisions and they don't understand the stress of wow, they haven't turned him down... Could it be that the dream will happen?

My son is very invested in this process, but as his parent, I truly enjoy talking to others who get it. I have felt the pain in the posts that have gotten TWE's because I know that kid could be mine tomorrow and I know anyone who has made it this far has invested him/herself into this process and it takes guts to lay it on the table and go for it!

Walterd,
You asked why they-other applicants-applied. Only they can tell you. I would guess that most applied because they want to serve their country as officers in the Navy(or whatever SA they applied to), some because they felt pressured by family-not just parents, some because they see it as a free education and others because they get to play D1 sports as recruited athletes.

I guess my question for you would be why do you wonder why anyone else applied? You should only care about why you applied and if your reason for doing so is a noble one.

That said, you should start a separate thread on the topic and leave this thread to the mailbox stalkers.

I appreciate all the quick responses to my question. Sorry for putting this under the wrong thread. I am a bit unfamiliar with internet forums as this is the first one I have used.

I am so sad for your DS. I went through this last year with my son, who also received the TWE. He was not a legacy, but his stats otherwise were similar. He was so disappointed and really derailed for a bit, especially since an NROTC TWE followed closely after. But I wanted to share with you his journey since. He signed up for the NROTC College Program, really loved it. He is at Villanova now as a MechEng. He reapplied both to NROTC and USNA, and was notified that he received an NROTC scholarship in the fall. He was ambivalent about continuing his USNA application, but decided after the fall semester that he wanted a more military environment, sent his fall grades (3.9 GPA) and received the BFE this year. Another of his NROTC classmates also reapplied, was accepted, but has elected to stay in NROTC. I am certain your DS will be happy at FSU- awesome school! but if he still has the desire for the USNA- there are many of last year's TWE crew- like me, spelly and others- whose DS and DD have BFEs for the class of 2019.
Sent you a PM. Thanks!

As we continue to stalk the mailboxes, has anyone seen a recent number of appointments already offered to USNA? There was a recent post on the USMA forum that quoted from the admissions FB page a specific number of appointments that had already been accepted. Just curious...

Mail Box stalking is OVER! BFE came today!!! DS is home on spring break and was able to get the mail. He just sent us a photo of the certificate. My husband and I work at the same school and just met each other running down the hallway as we both got the text at the same time. I am soooo excited for him. For those of you still waiting, don't give up hope and best of luck to you!

I had no interest in attending USNA until I went to NASS (which my mom made me go to). While there I was completely floored by the astonishing teamwork I had seen and been a part of. I had never witnessed anything like that. (I come from an extremely competitive family and I play tennis and swim). I just found it to be the most amazing thing in the world to be in an environment where everyone wanted you to succeed and would do almost anything to help you get there. I was still only considering finishing my application until the flight home from NASS when I spoke to a retired marine who inspired me with his story. I come from a family with a ton of military history (all 3 of my siblings have been in the military at one time or another) but my parents were shocked when I told them what this is what I want to do because they didn't think that it was for me. They became extremely involved in the process because they are proud of me and want to help me in whatever way they can

Congratulation to everyone who have received their appointments!!!
After reading posting for a few weeks I have to ask the question: If I still have not heard anything from the Academy, is that a good thing?

Nollie, so happy for your DS!!! Congratulations to him. When I see I have an alert on this thread, I'm hesitating -- will this be news I really want? Kind of like those visits to the mailbox. Nollie, your news is so welcome to all on this thread -- the BFEs are still coming!
