C/O '26 parents - place to commiserate and share. Roller coaster for the next 3 years!

Perhaps the Athletic Director and/or the new Superintendent can change the regs to allow 5th year seniors to play.
I was not aware that other Service Academies were allowing 5th year seniors...and if they do,,,thats WRONG. SECDEF or someone should step in and make the other Service Academies fulfill their mission, which I presume doesn't mention producing football players or TV revenue. The answer is not dropping to their level to stay competitive with them.

o I don't understand why a vast majority of alumni in decision level positions and the new Superintendent (according to you) can accept a losing season year after year after year.

Division 1 College football has drifted away from its origin, and its all about ratings, TV revenue and now NIL contracts for the players. Football, and other college athletics does contribute to the Naval Academy mission, but not when it becomes an end to itself. The Service Academies should play each other (on equal terms), but beyond that, I don't care if USNA goes DIII where they play more like oriented schools.

... yeah, according to Coach Saban, potential players demand $5K just to visit the campus per NIL protocols.

Army and Air Force has always been more lenient on 5th years. That isn’t anything new. Navy has had some over the years, but rarely. It’s been awhile since I can even remember having any. Air Force, during COVID, let Cadets take a year (someone correct me on this one). Many believe this was a very athletic based decision, but open to all Cadets. Eventually that will go away too. The COVID extra year and transfer portal leniency shook up the athletic landscape. It did not help the SAs. Heck we are seeing 7th and 8th year players all over the place now in football. Eventually the COVID year will be gone. The portal will shift some to be less lenient. It goes in waves. Navy has had waves of success and not so much success. It’s a first year head coach. Most coaches are given more than half a season to prove themselves, most get 2-3 seasons. Yelling at SA players is not necessarily an effective method. Our coach tried it at USNA. They were a yeller. It fell on deaf ears. Every team is different, but SA athletes tend to block yelling. It’s a habit we develop in Plebe Summer.

And most Mids would rather not go to games. That isn’t anything new. Mids tolerate it more when they win because they tend to hand out weekends like candy. So they love the team during those times for what they get from it.

Try being a Lions fan. 😳😂
Also, in 1.5 seasons of Navy football, we have had more wins than the high school football team my dd cheered for in 4 years. It was the most grueling torture I’ve ever had to sit through.
The lions look good this year. I have always liked the lions.

Lol - there were years my son’s high school team were lucky to win one game.

.. . see comments.
"... block yelling... from Plebe summer." DS mastered the yak method. He looks the detailers in the eyes and hears yak, yak, and yak.
"Mids would rather not go to the games." DS walks around the stadium meeting people from all over. The only time he watches is when we're eating pizza-hamburger combo.
"...5th year seniors...that isn't anything new." If that's old knowledge, why is USNA accepts that? Above comment from a retired naval officer said not aware of it? Why accept a defeatist posture year after year? In fairness, I'm calling out a defeatism operational concept. I'll be gone after 2026 graduation.

Because MOST alumni remember that the mission of the United States Naval Academy is to produce leaders for the Navy and Marine Corps and not win football games. Of course, we all prefer to win and will go out of our way to support it which can and does include some extra benefits/ benefits for the team but there are limits and most that I've known feel that the course of instruction is FOUR years and in those rare cases when more is needed, it does not come with additional athletics.

Why does USNA accept USAFA (and USMA) using 5th year players? Its really not something that USNA has the ability to change. For the record, most USAFA/USMA grads that I've heard opine on the subject agree that it is not a good thing.

Defeatest Operational Concept? The Service Academies do not face a level playing field in the major revenue sports from the start - significant limits on player size and academic requirements make competing with the "factories" very difficult. That said, USNA has one of the largest Varsity Sports programs in the nation and when you look at the relative size of the institution, it is extremely impressive. For the record it is much larger than that of the competing SAs. The OVERALL record of USNA sports has been and continues to be very positive with lots winning seasons across the range of sports. Navy has won the Patriot Athletic Conference's Presidents cup, the overall championship several years in a row.
Of course our main rival is Army and do I need to detail the record for Star Competition over just about any period?
BLUF: USNA wins the star competition almost every year.

... your argument above is another excuse why the Navy football team is a loser year after year. Since I started talking about Navy football, I've seen many excuses about 5th year seniors are not allowed by mid level management alumni, Superintendent, and the SECNAV. Now a new excuse ---> Star Competition. Ok, you can have a million Star Competition + Presidents Cup, Navy football is still a loser year after year. Let me make this simple for you to understand. In Spec Ops "goat lab" you can do CPR + emergency surgery for hours on a dead goat and no beats, it's dead. Similarly, (from the previous post) you can put a permanent eye liner + velvety lipstick on a pig, it's still ugly, it's a pig.
Back to SECNAV, did someone inform the White House about 5th year seniors in the Service Academies except Navy? Why not ? In my 30 year military career, I've written twice to the White House about military issues. I received a thank you response from President Clinton and President Bush. Did someone from the Navy community even have the internal fortitude to let the President know about the uneven playing field in which Navy football plays? Why not? I'm just a parent ok. But if Navy football loses to the two service Academies this year, I will send a letter to the White House. Amen.

Put in your letter they need to address the weight and height limits for midshipmen so they can get better lineman, which will help them win a few more games. To heck with the needs of the big navy.

... another reason I'm pissed off about the constant losing season is becoming the accepted norm. I'm only here because my son is a 3/C at USNA... which by the way he is visiting this weekend, so lots of cooking till you drop.

Except for the many years when Navy DOES have a good team and does well. We are not that far removed from many Army/Navy victories in a row along with playing in postseason bowls.
I'm the first to tell you that I'm not happy with what the football team is doing over the past few yrs but we've managed to do VERY well without 5th year seniors and >325 lb linemen who get 800 on their SATs

Navy has had some really good seasons and not that long ago. With recent NCAA changes with NIL, transfer portal and COVID extra year it definitely did not help Navy. Navy has also lost some great players to the transfer portal. Some of that is due to inconsistent and ever changing pro sports policies. I like the new Navy coach. Our defense has been pretty decent. Our offense is improving. Heck the team of today would destroy the team when I was there. They are bigger, faster, stronger and more talented. Yes we don’t have an entire line of 325+. But we are 285+ these days which is still much bigger than even a decade ago. It’s year 1 of a new coach. I am excited with what I see and look forward to what he can do with the program. But it takes more than 1/4 of a season to change the system, recruit talent for their system and build the culture they want. I have no doubt Coach Newberry will. I have watched the ups and downs of Navy football for decades. Been some amazing years along the way and some painful ones. I watch regardless, as do most OGs. Navy’s sports program is amazing. I think Ohio State and Stanford might have more D1 sports than Navy. Overall the program is extremely successful and produces amazing grads.

Some regular colleges are struggling in the new football landscape, too. Some are reaping the benefits. My alma mater has been ‘growing and improving’ for going on 6 yrs now. Each year, facing a seemingly different obstacle that prevents them from being their best.

Nothing but respect for a SA athlete. Period. Whose purpose at a SA is to become a military officer. Did anyones kid attend bc of the football team (other than football recruit)? Navy football is a bonus. 2nd to the primary goal of commissioning and serving. Imo.

They operate under unique constraints. That are impressive in and of themselves.

The new conferencing is going to be interesting to watch. I think it will keep changing for the next few years.

Forgot that part! Interesting is an understatement.

Honestly I can’t keep up with the new conferencing and where everyone is going to land. At the end of the day, I guess it doesn’t matter. I do think if Navy continues on a positive trend with Coach Newberry, Navy will be competitive in their Conf. I am guessing Army will join the conference, but the Army Navy game will be protected in its current state. I know this has been a requirement for both teams from what I can tell.

It mattered to me when the Big East was destroyed when Syracuse and others went ACC. I really loved the old Big East for basketball.

I didn’t follow Syracuse as closely when they switched.

Old ACC was awesome. I don't even know who is where anymore. When UMD moved out of the ACC, I pretty much stopped following their football and basketball teams.

And the history of Navy football has always been contentious. I remember being a rebellious teen with my dad at a game in the 80's where I said I don't know why we come to watch them, because they are always terrible and losing. I'm surprised my dad didn't beat my azz right then and there. I'd rarely seen him so pizzed off. :eek3:

Bringing in football killed the Big East. So much incredible basketball on tv when ESPN was desperate for content. If you’ve never seen the 30 for 30 Requiem for the Big East well worth it.

Go Huskies!
