In the logging in 2013 it say bring razor, i was wonder if electric razors are allowed? thanks for the imput.

toddman10, don't pack one straight away. Have your parents bring it during parent's weekend or send it to you when the "ok" is given that you can use one. I've seen instances of Mids being able to use them sooner than some previous years but never allowed during Indoc. Bummer huh? It would save some time.

Thanks that is what we thought, thought an electric would save time in the morning. The list also said 6 white towels but no size, everything else was specific like brand and shoe model. So any regs on towel size? thanks. Also what is the scoop on pens, pencils, notebooks and graphing calculators?

Another question about the packing list; It doesn't seem like we are being issued shoes. Any one know why this is? I guess it'll be nice to have a pair already broken in if we arn't being issued them.

Running shoes were an addition to the list this year. So definitely take the opportunity to break them in.

There were no requirements on the towel size last year. But be warned, these towels will get abused. Our daughter ended up short 2 or 3 by the end of Indoc last year, and I think they were only told to bring 4. So bring cheap towels you won't mind losing. Then replace them later if you need to.

We sent our daughter with the required black pens but no paper. It wasn't on the list. But it would have been good to have some. She also brought a calculator. Last year there was a problem with supplies because of the switchover from the old school store to the NEX (Navy Exchange). But I suspect that there is always a run on school supplies at the beginning of the academic year. However, you don't want to have with you any more than you will need during Indoc. You just won't have the time to deal with extra stuff.

We became very friendly with our Post Office staff very quickly as we responded to frequent requests for things that were sold out at the school store or just weren't available. Pack a box of things you will want right after Indoc and have your parents send it to you then.

Pens were not on the list. Is there a longer list in the packet that comes in the mail?
Thanks

shoes

I noticed that some of the mids advised two pairs of running shoes in years past. I believe they were issued one and brought another pair from home. I was thinking of having my son take a pair and wear a pair, since they will be running several times a day.
I also noticed that mids need to bring shorts this year too. Seems worth it to me in light of the fee reduction. I just hope the list doesn't grow much more, so there isn't a lot to carry around during indoc.

Shoes

Texmom has a good point. I'm not an expert but maybe another word of caution to everyone when buying your plebe's running shoes. The logging in packet lists New Balance models 1063, 769, 757 and 749. I'm not sure how much running that will be done at Indoc but the reviews on the 757 model are not that good. A good source to check is the "Runner's World" site on-line. You can use it to research which shoe is best for your plebe's weight and foot/walking characteristics. Stability is important. It might also be smart to buy your shoes from a reputable running shoe store in your area. They should be able to tell you which shoe would be best for your plebe's supenation/pronation needs. A little care choosing could help your son or daughter avoid any aches and pains along the way. Not trying to worry anyone. I guess I'd just say it's better to be safe than sorry.

Shoes

Sorry. I guess the correct term would be "plebe candidate"? Is that right?

They are "Candidates" during Indoc, then they are "Plebe Candidates" until Acceptance Day whereupon they become "Plebes". They will remain plebes until recognition and thereafter be referred to as "midshipmen"

"The Walking Company" carries the shoes in the 1000 series model, they had the white with red and if they fit they were willing to order them and have them shipped free. After making lots of calls I found a pair at a local store. Many merchants were very helpful when they heard he needed them for a Service Academy. We found the required models not that easy to find.

Mindy, do not get red with white running shoes. Make sure you get the correct model in the color specified, white with blue.

Another tip, make sure to bring the correct size clip board.

Even though it does not say to bring a pen, it would behoove you to think ahead and bring one. At Indoc your Candidate does not want to bring any attention to him/herself. Blend in is the key. With that said, my son had on a bright orange shirt which did draw attention to him, but it also made it easy to spot him across the grinder.

The list won't grow. Take what is listed. Again, I'm just waiting for my plebe parent's tips to get the final blessing from the Commandant and I will email them out and they will be available on the Parent's website. There is a lot of information in these tips for you all.

Don't worry too much about lugging around the things because the candidates luggage will be left in the gym.

What do candidates need to bring in the way of "civvies" other than what they have on when they report? Sleepwear? Son said not to bother, based on his earlier campus visit.

What I meant is that the store was willing to have him try on he red ones and then order the blue. The name of the game is blend in and stay under the radar.

There is no need for any civvies other than the clothes on their back. Be sure that the shirt they wear can be tucked in. Last year they made all of the Candidates change into their white socks before entering.

Last year pens were on the list - black ink only, for signing official forms. It won't hurt to have a few.

any recommendations on color for compression shorts it is not specified on the list?

That's weird since the female packing list specifies black compression shorts and we are to send two pairs of blue shorts:confused:
