NASS 2010 Acceptance Thread

now, how fast is the 3-4 miles? because i can do that, but i'm not sure if i need to work on going faster.

Just a little less than a month until session one! I'm wondering, what day do we take the CFA at NASS?

Also, I'm really looking to get that best CFA score award! (is it for each company for the best out of all ~750 kids?)

If I post where I'm at right now, would anyone be willing to give me an assessment of how I'm doing for the CFA? Maybe we can all share where we are and exchange tips or something, I don't know . Argh I'm so excited, I can't wait to see you all there at session one! What chances would we get for socializing? :thumb:

:wiggle:

Tina - can just give you some feedback from last year - all subject to change of course!

As I recall from what my son said, they at least announced just a male and female overall winner. I'm not sure if each squadron awarded them separately as well - I'll try to ask him later. The CFA was the first full morning - he arrived on Saturday and took it on Sunday morning. Strangely, they had some PT first, then took it later in the morning.

I'm certainly not an expert but I'd be glad to offer my thoughts on your CFA. I won't post my son's because he wouldn't be happy. Let's just say he has a way to go on his pushups/pullups/situps! On the plus side, at least he's not worried about the running!

I am in the same boat as your son. I have been called a "Classical Runner" i.e. no upper body strength.

Well, at least for pushups and pullups, seems like practice makes perfect! Son #1 is also the same build - 6'4 and like 150 pounds. Just practicing for the CFA last spring he went from about 22 pushups to 51 when he took them on the test and from 0 pullups to 10 - simply by doing them. Son 2 is starting a bit higher on those so hopefully can show the same improvement.

However, for some reason he missed the situp gene that the rest of us got. Son #1 never did less than the 95 (max) situps. Son 2 and I went to the gym the other day and after he laughed at me (yes, his 40-something mom!) for only being able to do 94 situps in the 2 minutes (I ran out of time!), he proceeded to do less than half that number! Hoping practice makes perfect for that as well, and it certainly won't hurt me to do them with him in the meantime!

I think I'll be fine on most of it. I have no problem with pull ups, push ups, sit ups, I throw in track so I'm assuming the basketball throw will be easy, and I've done the shuttle stuff before for football. Only thing I'm worried about (like most people) is running. Unfortunately, I broke my big toe Sunday so running is impossible for at least 2.5 weeks. Going to have to really push to get in shape after I'm better. I'm usually in good shape, but I've never enjoyed the "timed mile" (or any timed run for that matter). Have until session 3 at least.

There are links to some workout programs designed to help with situps/pushups/pull ups a couple pages back.

The 6-week programs I started for the push ups and sit ups have been going swimmingly. However, I started about two months ago to allow myself some flexibility in the workout regimens so I really don't know if you get the promised 100 push ups or 200 sit ups by the end of the six weeks.

I am proud to say I am able to max the sit ups at 95 in two minutes! It took me at least a month to get to this point. The sit ups weren't particularly too difficult, but it was a pain trying to find the right pace to get to 95 within two minutes

Push ups were a lot easier in terms of pacing. My problem was developing the muscles , heh.
I am able to average ~35-42 pushups. Within the last month, the least amount of push ups I have done in 2 minutes is 35 and the most is 42.. I have three weeks left to break 50. Any more tips? Also, I am not really sure if I'm doing all the push ups correctly (elbows at a 90 degree angle), so that number may be considerably lower.

My fastest mile time has gone down to 6:52, and I usually average the mile under 7:15. Argh, three full weeks left to drop a MINUTE.. is this possible? :D

I can do four pull ups, I have not been working on pull ups much.

And I have not yet practiced shuttle run or the basketball throw. Anyway, I would greatly appreciate any tips on how to improve or any comments on my progression.

Thank you for reading!

Tina - everything looks good to me so far. One suggestion I would make would be to do the items in order like you will on the actual CFA, with the same breaks (or lack thereof!) between them. My sons both found it harder to do pushups/situps right back to back, plus found after having done pullups just a few minutes before, they were tired trying to do the pushups in the first place! As I said, they're runners but were shocked with their times when doing the mile after everything else - because they didn't "feel" that tired, but were just running slower than expected! Now would be the time to start doing a full CFA every other day or so, even if you can't measure the distances exactly (shuttle/basketball), just to get a feel for how that whole progression affects you.

I'm going to NASS session 3! I have not been exercising as much as I would like to, but I guess I have about a month left to get into some kind of shape. Does anyone have any tips for me? I'm also wondering if anyone knew what kind of scores would it take to get that CFA award?

What time is everyone planning to show up? We are thinking around noon....might make for a long first afternoon though!

Hahaha! At first the cheapest flight I found (from California) would have me arrive at BWI at 6:45 AM!!!!!!!

And then I slacked off on buying tickets so those prices rose up so then the cheapest flight came to be one that would get me there at 10-ish am. whoo hoo! I'd love to meet up some of you guys. I'll be the 5'4" dark haired girl wearing pigtails :D

THREE WEEKS LEFT YEAAH!!!

hah my plane leaves at 12:10 in the morning! But I have a huge layover so I will be there around 11!

Gee, I was feeling bad making my son take a 6am flight, unfortunately more than 2 hours away, so we'll be spending the night before at a hotel. But I was thinking getting up at 4 or 4:30 would be bad! Good luck to all of you from the West Coast!

What are considered good CFA scores? I can't do a pull up, so I would probably have to opt for the flexed arm hang. I can do the shuttle run in 13-14 seconds, 30 sit ups, 22 push ups and a 7:40ish mile. How bad of shape am I in?
