Questions Thread

tiki-- you can call up admissions and they'll send you more gray envelopes if you need them. I am not sure if they automatically send appointees more gray envelopes but if you want to get it done ASAP and be proactive then just ask for more.

Thanks Jake! I was reading the info packet again and almost all of the forms say: "Send to: USMA Admissions..." whereas all of the gray envelopes I already have are addressed to my Great Lakes Region. So I'm assuming we're going to get sent more (new ones) addressed to the NY address? I guess I will wait a bit longer and see if envelopes are going to be sent.

Just out of curiosity, have any other appointees started sending in all this paperwork yet, or am I just getting ahead of myself?

You might be above the curve on sending the forms in but being early never hurt anyone. Early is on time and on time is late! I think admissions will send appointees new envelopes in due time (including special envelopes for dental xrays) but someone will need to confirm that

I'm trying to determine what days would be the best to plan to be up at West point to support my son (and actually get to see him, give him as much of a break as possible). I live in Pittsburgh.

I'm planning to drop him off on R-day, be there for A-day weekend, get him home for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Of the other holidays (Labor Day, Veteran's Day, etc.) is one or two any better than the others? I've seen where he'll get one pass a semester (around Veteran's day)? Can I get him out of town on any of those days?

Assuming he doesn't get in any trouble and doesn't have a sports competition in either of those weekends, he should be able to go home for both. Although they only get one pass per semester it is usually fairly easy to earn a second pass.

Are cadets allowed to have food in the barracks? If so, can cadets purchase food at the commissary?

Also, each cadet is assigned a land-line room phone that you take with you when you change rooms through the years.

Any good campgrounds around the Academy?

I've got a full size travel trailer. When I come up there to visit my son, I'd just as soon bring it up. Looking for full hookups. Also, if there is a MWR campground up there nearby, can I use it if my son makes the reservation????

Thanks!

This was posted on the West Point Parents Facebook page yesterday:

You have to call w/credit card and RV information in hand starting tomorrow at 10 a.m. (845) 938-8811. Cost for Round Pond - $25 (with water and electricity), cost for North Dock - $15 (no hook ups).

Just for clarification purposes:
those instructions were for reservations for Graduation which is why there is a reference to 'tomorrow'.

How often does the admissions committee meet?

I have pretty bad teeth. They're not DEFORMED, but I'm missing 1 tooth and am in need of braces. Would this hurt my admissions chances?

Every Tuesday.

DoDMERB will make the determination as to whether that is disqualifying or not.

Will DoDMERB make a decision after the cadet has been appointed?
As for every Tuesday, when can one USUALLY expect an appointment notification?

You can not be appointed until you are qualified medically. If you are disqualified by DoDMERB, you will need a waiver from WP. If you need a waiver, you will not be offered an appointment until the waiver has been granted. If the wavier is denied, you will not be offered an appointment.

As for every Tuesday, when can one USUALLY expect an appointment notification?
Your Congressman will be notified of the appointment and they are given a couple of days to be the one to tell you the good news. If they don't ( and some don't), then your MALO/FFR/RC can tell you. In the meantime, WP will be preparing your appointment certificate to mail to you, which may be how you find out. In other words, you could find out on a Tuesday or several days after that when the appointment comes in the mail.

Is that for every reason AF, ie Say you fail out, become disabled somehow, honor code violation, or just choose to separate?

Also, what if you fail out, become disabled, or violated honor code cow or firstie year? Would you still need to serve your commitment in all of these circumstances?
