The Reapplying Club

I am most likely going to reapply to USAFA next year and I had a question about nominations. Do I reapply for a senator/congressional nomination with the high school seniors (I will be a college freshman) or is there another process?

Nomination process is the same. You'll be competing against seniors, others reapplying, prepsters...

It is the same process. I talked to our MOC's office a week or so ago and she said they have college freshman apply every year. You will need everything you needed the first time around.

Polevault, I believe the only thing you don't need to redo for your reapplication (after July 1) is the DODMERB exam. I was told it is good for 2 years. Counselor also reminded us that 30% of USAFA class is usually comprised of post graduate HS kids, meaning already in college or prep school. Nice thing is, you know what is needed for the reapplication and can start working on it. Counselor said reapplying is a plus as it shows how determined / interested you are in the Academies and willingness to serve.

Nominations

Wait so if my college is in a different state or district than my high school district, do I still apply to that original one or the new one...so confused

Birgitte, please call your MOC office, but I'm pretty sure you apply in the state where your permanent address is (home address, parent's house, wherever your home base is), not where your college is. I'll let others confirm this as well.

I believe it is the district of the congressmen you could vote for...even if you wouldn't vote for him/her in three lifetimes.

New Mexico Military Institute as a Prep school

I am currently a sponsored Air Force Prep student at the New Mexico Military Institute. I have already received my appointment to the class of 2015 at USAFA. My year here at NMMI has been an invaluable one. I was able to really focus in on my academic skills as well as physical abilities. Every prep takes college level classes that are close to the difficulty of academy classes. At NMMI I was able to adjust to a military lifestyle similar to the type that I'll see at the Academy next year.

Also, good luck to anyone hoping to reapply next year or is waiting to hear a decision for this year.

How do you like NMMI? I know how our Falcon experience at NWP was, but How is all of the 'military' stuff going? What do you all do in this area?

Wow club members. I am floored. DS is now planning to apply to USNA as well as reapply to USAFA. This decision learned of this morning when we picked him up from VT, where he spent a day and night with Cadet Corp and all ROTC dets. More to follow after full debrief. A shocking turn of events. The Navy must have "put on the dog".

VAMOM, You must fill us in and we will cheer him on! Either way he goes, he will still be serving his country. PS. I know one of the engineering professors at VT. Wonderful man and family. His youngest was a classmate of my youngest son. Best to your whole family.

Question

I just got the bad news from my counselor. Apparently qualified but no vacancies or something of that sort. Does anyone know if there is a specific appointment for people who are enrolled in ROTC ? As many of you are doing, I am going through the less preferred path until next year. Thanks, A1

ROTC has the option for recommendations just like the MOC. So yes it is another way to get in the Academy. There is a limited number though.

There is a limited number of ROTC appointments, BUT every ROTC candidate can also apply for their MOCs, thus, you actually get another slate to compete on for the appointment compared to the traditional HS candidate.

Door closes, window opens.

Good luck.

Hi & More Questions

So yeah, got the qnv and gonna try again. if u go 2 college, join rotc and reapply, do your chances of getting appointment go up or are you better off going to a prep school? Another thing, are there certain majors they favor more; I know engineering is a big one.

On a whole the AFA likes 2nd timers. I won't say they favor them, as much as I would say the 2nd timers have learned from their past and corrected their weaknesses, thus, they are more competitive.

Additionally, as it has been noted they can get that ROTC nom, which means one more slate to compete on. Plus, competitive areas for MOCs may give an edge to a 2nd timer, with that golden ticket of PRINCIPAL.

A lot goes into the equation, and nobody should take applying the 2nd time is a gimme. Remember everything matters. Plus, understand since you are now on a semester and not quarter grading cycle, that gpa is going to be your only shot. They will wait for the grades in Dec. to appt, but they may give an LOA prior to that time.

It is the same rollercoaster ride minus the DoDMERB, since that is good for 2 yrs.

If I get a prep school or falcon foundation spot is there any chance that I would still be able to get an appointment to USAFA at the end of may or june? Or do they count you out and go on to the next since you've already been accepted into those programs?

They do not count you out.

That was an excellent question. I had wondered the same thing.

Hey, Steve! What's the word on the street about when the notifications for prep or falcon go out?

I reapplied this past year and I had to retake the DoDMERB. I did have a waiver last year so maybe that's why? If I'm reapplying again, do I have to retake it or is there someone I need to tell that I already took it last year?
