The Reapplying Club

I was wondering if there was anyone here who has reapplied to the Academy more than once, as in applying for a 3rd or more time. The past 2 years I've gotten a qualified but no vacancy letter and it absolutely kills me to be so close. I'm considering reapplying but I don't know if it would be like beating a dead horse and I can't get the thought of going to USAFA out of my head.

I know a young man...actually a 1st LT in the USAF...took him until his third time...he graduated in '08.

He's now an AF Pilot.

My son. :thumb: This year he won an appointment to USAFA Prep. We're hoping third time's a charm. Reapply! (See the quote at the bottom of my posts.)

SOP while a prep is to retake ACT and/or SAT during the prep year and to apply for all nominations for which one is eligible. The reality is, as a prepster, the appointment is theirs to lose. If grades, PFT/CFT scores, military etc. are all satisfactory (e.g. "SAT," different than the SAT standardized test) and a nomination is not forthcoming, the supe has a certain allotment s/he can use to complete the qualified prepster's application, in compliance with Title X U.S.C.

Sorry I missed the email notification of your informative answer while halfway around the world from home. Thank you for filling in some of the details for us!

Thank you all.

Thanks for the responses to the question about the nomination. It really is not super clear in the packet. My husband and I read it different and I just wanted to clarify. My husband felt it said that the PS would provide a board that reviews everything and DD did not need a nomination. I got the idea DD still needed a nomination. I feel better knowing because I know they will have their hands full when they enter prep school and DD can at least start getting her stuff together like writing essays etc. Thanks again for the great info. And thanks Flydreamer for pursuing this issue. I really don't feel Flydreamer meant it in a bad way at all. It is getting to be crunch time at the AFA and the wheels are just turning a little slower than they were, say a month ago. Thanks again Flieger and Pima for helping out. I wish I had half the knowledge about all this stuff you guys do.:thumb::wink:

By all means re-apply. Things should be much easier. You know what to do and when to do it. What do you have to lose? Pursue your dreams!!!!

Well, here we go again! DS was home last weekend and got his prelim application done, so now he has waded back in (and seems more confident of himself this time). He has been working out pretty hard while on camp staff and has been working especially hard on his core strengthening.

Me! This year will be my third time applying and I know exactly how you feel! I have received that letter both years as well. I have been debating whether or not I will just being beating a dead horse as well, and receiving the same letter again come next March, but the one thing I have always told myself is, you won't know unless you try. So why not give it another shot and pursue your dreams. I know of many people from my Congressional District who applied 4 times before receiving their appointment. Keep trying if it is something you truly want. I keep telling myself the same thing. Trust me I know it is hard. I believe I know who Flyerdreamer's son is due to him going to the same prep school as me last year and yes it will be his third time, but he did at least see a result this year! And trust me he worked his butt off at this prep school and truly deserved it, but I do know how you feel not receiving anything these past two years! Keep your head up!

When you reapply do you have to get your high school teachers to write you a letter of recommendation each time? Or does the academy use the letter from last year? I got all three letters last year but I dont know if I can get my soph/junior/senior hs math teacher to write me another letter because of various reasons.

Jaron, Admissions will keep the three letters from last year. You will submit three new letters from your college professors. Ideally you will be taking pre-engineering classes like Chemistry, Calculus, and English so have these professors provide the recommendation letters. And yes, the Academy folks know that college classes can be large and that the professors may not know you as well as your high school teachers did.

Are you talking about the online recommendations? Like the ones that the teachers fill out online? Because I was thinking the same thing. I'm going to be a sophmore in college and I doubt that some of my high school teachers would still remember enough about me to write a good letter.

Yeah it seems like a hassle for them to write another letter. I think the air force would allow the teacher to just say "you can use the letter I wrote in the past". That might work if the academy still has the letter saved.

Probably more appropriate letters of recommendation (or online evaluations) would come from some of your college professors if you're going to be a college sophomore this year. You're a bit too far removed from HS I believe. That old adage "what have you done lately" comes to mind. Your college record is going to matter more to the AFA since part of what they are trying to decide is whether you (or any candidate) has what it takes to be successful in college--so hearing from a professor about your great work habits, organizational skills, time management, mastery of the material etc. is going to carry more weight than a HS teacher from 2-3 years ago.

Here's a question for those who have reapplied before. Since you can't start the application until the beginning of July, when does your status normally change from "applicant" to "candidate?"

Is this when the forms for submitting essays and stuff come up?

Well, the forms are up! DS's counselor said to fill out all forms except for the letters....she can pull out the letters from last year. Some of the forms look new or different from last year.....

wow...they could have gone ROTC and had their commission and a year's service in that time....

That was cutting it down to wire for the age limit. I would assume they also had a 4 yr college degree in hand. Man, they must have really wanted that knocker.

Did he do ROTC? If he did, that would have meant he gave up his commissioning to enter.

If he didn't do ROTC why not? Yes, I understand the AFA experience, but I think every cadet would say their ultimate goal is to be commissioned into the AF. Hence, if that was his ultimate goal why didn't he do ROTC the 4 yrs he applied?

If he did ROTC, again why would he give up his commission to enter as a cadet for 4 more yrs.

Just asking because this is bewildering to me. I get some kids at college, even as jrs. in college decide they now want to be in the military, thus no ROTC, experience, and it will be their 1st board. However, this person tried 5 times so I am not comprehending not doing ROTC for those 4 yrs.
