We are considering a springbreak vacation out of the country. Assuming canidate has an appointment to USNA. Are there any concerns with traveling outside the country prior to I-day? I know some of the canidates will be coming from different countries so I hope this is not a silly question.
Thank you for any guidence/advice you can provide.

I would be concerned about an Appointee contracting a foreign illness prior to reporting …. I would minimize the Risk of anything that would cause a DQ on the reporting day.

Our daughter, who recently received an appointment, asked if we could go Skiing? …. Welllllll …. I don't think so.

Until you take the oath on I-Day, you are a private citizen. Thus, your DS/DD can go anywhere he/she wants. I would probably avoid places that might cause some heartache on security clearance forms later on, such as Iraq, Iran, North Korea, etc. :) It's more important that DS/DD doesn't do something dumb -- whether in the US or abroad. It can sometimes be easier outside the US if laws on drugs and liquor are more lenient -- or much more serious where laws are more strict.

No issues with leaving the country before I-Day. After I-Day, foreign travel will require submitting paperwork. Great way to send your kid off. Family trips will be harder to come by after taking the oath.

Personally, I wouldn’t take my candidate to a foreign country before they report. It may or may not be a big deal or lead to any issues later with the SA or SF-86, but seems unnecessary IMO. We hope for foreign travel to visit our kid at his future duty stations if he’s stationed overseas.

Planning a “last” family trip is great, and there are many great places in the U.S. and it’s territories to accomplish this. Just be sure not to ski (lol), and pack bubble wrap!
Enjoy your trip!

We went to Europe for spring break before plebe year. So glad we did. Trying to plan another abroad trip this summer and boy, it’s a headache.

Grand Canyon anyone? You could probably stand on a corner in Winslow Arizona on the same trip. I did! A day I'll never forget.

We return four days before I day from our last hurrah and can you say bubble wrap? I'll be a nervous Nelly bit know we need to live life and enjoy every moment together.

Many of the cadets have families who are US military living overseas, so foreign travel/residence is not a problem to a country like Italy, an ally and NATO country. On a vacation you probably won't form bonds, have loyalty or strong affection with a foreign national so there should be no problems. Just keep track of dates/places.

There are all sorts of threads on this Forum about Bubble Wrap.... You can spend your life worrying about What If's ? My view is to live your life , continue doing what has made you successful, and if problems arise, deal with it. Of course, be smart ... (visiting Iraq, North Korea etc. don't qualify), and make good decisions.

We're taking a cruise right after graduation and right before I-Day. My son wants to try to go SCUBA diving. I'm asking if he can just pet a dolphin instead.

@OldNavyBGO .... You are right. My "foreign illness" was a little sniveling, I suppose .... Everyone should know to drink bottled water in Cancun.

On the other hand, if you are not a Regular skier, I would say that it may be best to avoid it between now and June/July.

This is no way to live....
