Just came back on sunday from Vance AFB where my son graduated from Undergraduate Pilot Training. He got his wings, is going to be going to SERE school and then is off to Barksdale AFB in Shreveport Lousiana. Two weeks ago was drop night and he was assigned the B-52 bomber. It wasnt his first choice, hell it wasnt his 24th choice but he is happy with it.

As for the our time at Vance it was great. Friday morning, they had a little ceremony and breakfast for for the T-38 pilots where they showed the class graduation video, the pilots spoke about the best and worst experiences and their trainers talked about the training itself. Later that morning they had the graduation and of course my wife cried her eyes out. We got a nice tour of the facilities afterwards, got to go up to the planes and later went on a basic flight simulators (still a lot of fun) That evening the AF put on a really nice black tie event. For a catered event (off base) the food was actually prettty decent. It was a really nice time. The best part was spending 4 days with my son. Six of us came to visit and he tried to show us the real Oklahoma. As we are from Los Angeles, it was different. As for my son's fellow pilots, they were all wonderful people. As you can imagine many of the pilots are married and their wifes and children live on base. One of the pilots was a women who was also married. As far as i can tell, none of the other women pilots were married. Both of them were in the early 30s and the husband was according t him the only male spouse (non pilot) on base . In any case, it was wonderful to see how well he was accepted by the all of the pilots. I must say they were a great punch of guys and gals and I wish them luck where ever they may go

The B-52's were built in the 1950's, and they're expected to be in services until 2050's. Anyone else find that amazing? God Bless America and the zoomers that fly the BUFF!

Same situation as the C-5 (built in the early 60s, projected to remain in service past the 2040s) and likely some iteration of the C-130.

Congrats, Humey!

He is going to try to move up to the B-21 in the next five years once they start producing them and he some hours on the B-52

I do not envy him the SERE training. ;)
My wife is freaked out about it. The commander of Vance AFB was at the the dinner and he went around talking to all of the parents. Seems like a great guy. My wife brought it up to him about how freaked out she is about him going. He tried to reassure her about it and I guess it kind of worked. Needless to say, I didnt mention it to my son that she spoke to him about it.

@Humley: We're planning to attend a graduation soon as well. Were you able to use your Drivers License as ID to get on the base. The wife & I just received our Enhanced Licenses which allow us to use as ID for domestic flights after October, 2020.

Congrats, Humey! Thanks for letting us know what he got. You'll have a lot more "firsts" to experience as he moves through training and then his first unit. You'll have a chance to go to Louisiana or North Dakota for visits. There is a huge amount of history in the BUFF squadrons just from the sheer length of time that they have been around. My uncle who commissioned from USAFA in 1963 flew the BUFF in Vietnam and he retired in 1988.

I've had the opportunity to fly the BUFF a few times. It's a handful of airplane, "the air-frame design" is from the 50's but today's beast is NOT an antique. It's a whole lot of whoop...in a big package.

He'll find the jet a challenge to learn, even more challenging to fly well, but when he masters it, he'll be ready to transition to any air-frame and do great things!

Congratulations to him!!!

You can get on base with a DL. UPT bases are accustomed to winging ceremony weekends where many guests are not military.
Unless something has changed, all that occurs is that your child will sign anyone in via the Visitor's Center on base. They put the names of everyone that does not have a military id on the list. You stop and sign in. They can give the pass for several days. If you are driving to the base they will ask for registration and insurance.
My hubby is retired. We have gone through this process multiple times. His retirement ceremony, DS's winging (FIL was not military) and our DS's wedding with many non-military guests.

I do not know which UPT base he is winging out of, but if it is Del Rio, most people stay on base. He/She will need to contact the base hotel to book rooms for you. It is a nice hotel, but it is not huge. Fencers, Stealth and my DS winged out of there. We had no problems getting a room.

Also every squadron and every base does it a little different. Yet, certain things will be the same.
If you want a flight simulator ride have them set it up for an optimal time...1st come 1st serve.
They will walk you out to the flight line for a photo op. Usually they will have all 3 airframes out there, the 1,6 and 38.
Most students will buy a breakable set of wings. It is like commissioning day with a special person doing the honors.

Hope that helps

I dont think the federal law has gone into effect yet as its supposed to happen in 2020. I would assume the bases will also require it at the same time. Having said that, at least myself, my wife and younger son have the new enhanced drivers licenses so we had no issue. My in laws also came and I have no idea if they have the upgrade license. Ironically my son in the Air Force hasnt upgraded but since he has his military ID, it shouldnt be any issue getting on base or on a commerical jet.
