Summer Seminar Results 2020

Honestly, I’m extremely surprised I got selected to attend. My app wasn’t strong at all on my opinion.
To everyone who didn’t get selected, keep your head up. Summer seminar doesn’t determine your ability to get an appointment at all! :)

They just sent out emails!!! Question, they want responses by March 15, but I’m also waiting to hear back from Navy. I can only chose one because my school doesn’t let out until right before the last session for both. Any advice on what to do?
My DS had to go during school, so I would ask your school if you can attend.

My daughter got not selected also. Is it worth it to email the admissions counselor and ask what she needs to improve?

No, this is not an indicator on her competitiveness for an appointment... plenty of kids have not been selected for SS and end up at the Academy. It is difficult; however, not an indicator on her ability to get into the school.

Ok I understand that plenty of cadets are not selected for summer seminar and still end up at the academy. However, does anyone know of someone getting accepted into summer seminar and then getting denied appointment to USAFA?

I don’t know of anyone getting accepting into SS and not SA... that said, this is my first blush at SAs. :) Sorry!

I know several that got in summer seminar and never received an appointment. SS is not an automatic indicator of your true competitiveness for Appointment.

I’m really sorry to all those who didn’t receive the news they wanted. Also just as encouragement, my daughter didn’t get invited to summer seminar or CVW at Navy and was even rejected initially. Long story but ended up at the Navy prep school and graduated from Navy in 09. Is still in as a Lte. Commander with an amazing career thus far. Do not lose hope if this is your dream. So many qualified students get accepted to the SAs without going to SS.

Congrats! Do you mind sharing your GPA, SAT, ACT, EC, Etc. ?
Sure. I have a 3.8/4.0 GPA at a competitive California high school. At the time, I hadn't taken the ACT or SAT yet so I submitted my PSAT (out of 1520) I got a 680 on reading/writing, and a 730 on math (both 99th percentiles). I am an eagle scout, the president/founder of a STEM related club at my high school, a leader of my school's robotics team, and I won a ribbon at bay area makerfaire in 2019. I am also a varsity athlete and am league MVP, First team all-league (2x), and regional champion.

Yeah I tried that. I’d be missing a portion of my final assessments which would land me with a lecture from the principal and having to sit through summer restriction for a month before I make up my finals. And they won’t let me take them early because I “could compromise the integrity of the assessments.”

Well, Navy might not come out until April 25th, so you might be out of luck there.

I already posted earlier on this thread if you want to go look at it but my application was as followed:

I did not submit any SAT/PSAT/ACT scores simply because I have not taken them yet.

Unweighted GPA=3.7 weighted=4.0

Class ranking* Approximately 106 out of 737 students last time I checked which was end of freshman year.

Extracurriculars: Varsity Field Hockey, USA Futures Field Hockey, U.S Naval Sea Cadets, 1 school club, French National Honor society, Volunteer at two animal shelters

Honestly, my application wasn’t that strong compared to some others on this thread.
I think it helped that I’m a female and a minority.

Ugh, I wish schools would be more understanding. My son took some early and some after school ended, they were so great and flexible. I would suggest picking the program that best aligns with where you want to go and do. Also, the one you may not have the opportunity to visit.

The first day you arrive is processing. The next day is Boot Camp Day, so basically you are given the proper basic cadet training situation with yelling and push ups. After that you do tours of the Air Field and gliders and the UAV facility. You visit most of the facilities there, have lectures, panels with cadets (Especially Gender Panels). There is a classes day where you visit classes and learn basic stuff. There was a sports day where it was CFA "Practice" which was just people doing sit ups and push ups but them not counting towards anything and actual team sports (Which you do not get to choose what you do.) The last full day is doing stuff to get ready to leave, an actual PT session, and visiting the last of the facilities. The last morning there you get everything returned and head to a final lecture about application stuff and after that you either head home with mom and dad or get on a bus to get to the Airport. I missed out of the yelling part last year due to my flight getting delayed, luckily I was sponsored by the Academy to go and visit the Academy so it didn't cost me a thing. It was an awesome experience though, good luck to all.
I also got sponsored. I'm coming from NY. Where did you come from?

The East Coast as well. I flew out of PHL airport to give you a rough estimate of where I come from. It was awesome though, 1,000$ (That is how much it would have cost) that you get to keep and have an awesome experience.

If you don't mind sharing - what does it mean to be sponsored for the Summer Seminar? And what is the criteria for determining who is sponsored?

I asked myself that same question when it appeared on my portal. I am still a little unsure on the exact criteria as I have pretty average test scores and grades and such. I heard of a couple others that got sponsored as well. My hypothesis is that since myself and BigT live very far away from the Academy, we get a special consideration for it as well as maybe having OK or better test scores/grades. The closer you get to the academy the more kids want to get into it because they have more contact with it as well as more opportunity to visit. Us on the East coast may not have the chance to visit like those who live closer and the Academy likes people from many different states to apply to be diverse in that respect. So in states farther way that don't exactly have that many applicants from that state, the Academy wants them to check it out.
What it is is basically they pay for your flight to and fro and cover the cost of the registration fee thing. A flight from the East Coast is at the low end is 300$ one way. So the camp would cost at least 1000$ easily. It is awesome for people who live far because they get a free chance at seeing the Academy.
