Detailers looked AWESOME--only the livestream tech (1st session) problems distracted from the power of the ceremony. Families all over the country had set up YouTube feed and were tuned in, only to get frantic messages to move to computers for FB feed. I finally told extended family to just wait and listen to the second session (where they had fixed the sound issues) and I sent pictures of our company once we found them.) practicing the ceremony to make sure it looks crisp for y’all watching the livestream
Yes!! I remember it like it was yesterday--made me sit up a little straighter myself!Brings to mind I-Day for ‘22. The sun is blazing and the light is glaring, with the heat and rays reflecting off the plebes’ unstarched whiteworks. It’s been a very long day and many of the plebes are dozing off during the Supe’s speech. He gets to the part about Admiral Farragut’s immortal words. Says the Supe: “And Farragut yelled, ‘Damn the torpedoes!’” Immediately and in unison, the few hundred detailers, all standing smartly around the block of plebes, yells in a full-throated roar: “Full speed ahead!”
That woke up the dozers. Others snapped a bit straighter in their seats. Parents took notice. You saw — and heard — a preview of the next few weeks. Gives me chills when I think about it even now.
By the way, one thing that I did not realize until recently, is that Plebe Summer is very difficult and stressful for the detailers as well. There is so much going on behind the scenes to ensure that the training schedule is carried out and all the Plebes’ needs are being attended. Not to mention the fact that they must wake up before the Plebes and go to bed long after them. Can’t say it’s more or less hard. Just a different hard. Definitely feels like a better hard too! Both sides are very important and impactful experiences.
He and many of his cohorts seems to understand that they are going to still be plebes in the eyes of the upper classmen (and they kind of are, given their circumstances).
So I had an interesting letter in the mailbox today from DS - he asked for us to send him hand soap of all things! The letter was dated while they were still in ROM. @Kierkegaard or anyone else in the know here - should DS be asking detailers for more hand soap - I would think this would have been provided in adequate amounts due to COVID-19 if nothing else - or will they be given opportunities to get soap from the Mid store? I can certainly send him hand soap, but asking for hand soap via snail mail (which took 5 days to get here) and then waiting for the package (probably another 5 if we're lucky) seems a bit inefficient - I'm hoping he didn't wait until he was down to the last drop! Would appreciate any inside scoop. Thank you!
And thanks to all of you for you input, funny stories, and how the conversation almost always leads back to bacon.
Thank you! I appreciate you taking time to respond - I know you're busy!Best for you to send it in my opinion. They get issued a lot so they or their roommates should have some, but if he’s asking just send some. As a last resort he theoretically could get more but it would be deducted from his pay at the mid store, and would also require coordination with the detail which could take time.
I want to echo this!!! DS is a plebe. I am completely new to this world and this forum helped me in so many ways! I would have been frantic throughout without the info and banter in this forum. I am starting to feel like part of this Navy family. And I was so proud when I posted on the bacon thread!!And thanks to all of you for you input, funny stories, and how the conversation almost always leads back to bacon.

Me too...now I have to remember it so I can use it and make others look it up !Amplecti Sugentes, I had to look this up.
Okay now I need an order form! My DS took Latin in high school and would absolutely love this (you know, when he can wear civilian clothes!).
