Ship selection this week???

There are only a certain number of billets for O-1s on each ship (and for other ranks too). The ship has a precise manpower plan based on ship class, lifecycle stage, deployment status and other factors.
The ships left over, how are they going to fill O1s?

So NROTC and OCS will fill the remaining ships?

Those NROTC Mids, are they reporting as Reservists or Active Duty?

another question - do parents go to that? I saw many people in the audience that did not look USNA peeps.

It was fun to talk to my MIDN who was watching from his room with roommates. Cheering on their firsties and discussing the choices. Also saying it wasn’t helping them hammer out aero homework.
But it was fun. And awesome to spot a friend’s MIDN get their first choice.
Love this Navy family!

Watching some excerpts on the Instagram feed got me so fired up that I — just for a few moments — wished that DD had gone SWO. In the spotlight for a couple minutes, anticipation building, shipmates cheering your choice, then the afterglow.

Sometimes you get the feeling that SWOs are seen as second-class citizens. Ship Selection is a great reminder that surface warfare is the heart and soul of the Navy. Without it, there is no Navy. USNA does a tremendous job of making SWOs-to-be feel fantastic about their choice. Go SWO!

I enjoyed their choices in music. It was fairly easy to tell who did not go SWO as a first choice... "You Can't Always Get What You Want," "That's Life," "Plan B"...

I guess it’s all in your perspective!! I’ve never gotten a feeling that SWOS are seen as second-class citizens. Ever. Neither has my Mid. And it’s always been his first choice. And super excited and proud of them. He is so excited to be on the ocean.

Ouch, didn’t notice that.

That's the first time that Mrs. THP and I sat down to watch ship selection. Having cut out cable this year, it was wonderful to put it up on the big TV via ROKU in the living room. Knitted woobie over the legs and feet and lead crystal glasses with wonderfully smooth añejo tequila over a single large ice ball added to the festive nature of the event.
