Ship selection this week???

Is it really ship selection week?
Just curious, I’ve watch several ship selections in YouTube. Mids like to pick Rota, Bahrain, Sasebo, as well as Norfolk and San Diego. Pearl Harbor is not the favorite among the first mids to go on stage. I’m thinking “wow”, there are so many ships and no takers.
Is this the norm?

Silly question. How those this work? Do they chose base or actual ship assigments?

They choose ships and the ships are stationed to ports. Some make decisions knowing in advance a change of home port is scheduled for a ship.
Some select knowing a ship is or is not scheduled for retrofit or dry dock.

A ship in Rota today could be Norfolk tomorrow.

They know what they are picking. Many have been in touch with crew or prior MIDN who are in the fleet. Some made points of contact over trainings.

It is fun to watch.

I’m new at this with my DS in Foundation school.

From several videos I’ve seen, the event is like an Army-Navy pep rally with Navy reporters.

Then the roll call starts with the No. 1 Mid in the room (I can only guess she/he has the highest scores in academics/fitness etc).

One by one they go to the stage and pick a ship listed under a specific port. My original question was “how come the Mids always pick a ship from Rota, Bahrain, Sasebu, Norfolk, San Diego?” Pearl Harbor have many ships listed. I mentioned this to DS… without blinking he said, “good, I don’t need an apartment when I get there.”

A little FYI/trivia

Each Mid picks out their own “walk up” music. Much like a HS varsity wrestling meet on senior night. This is a big deal and takes a lot of time. At least in our house. He’s been pondering since Christmas 🎶 🎶

Awesome. Must be exciting. Any ideas on preferences?
Absolutely…

Every Mid has differing situations important to them. That’s also what makes it exciting. You cannot know what those above you have as decision influences. So they all have plans A-xxx. Sort of like applying for an appointment! Full circle moment.

As a Plebe parent I will be watching intently and will have to make sure I take my allergy medicine to prevent watery eyes. DS (right now, may change) is heading full steam to SWO so interested in this process.

What do the submariners do for ship selection?

Submarine officers choose their submarine ("boat") during their last school training which might be either Submarine Officer Basic Course or prototype training. Before that they would have completed nuclear power school. Midshipmen in the submarine pipeline for the Class of '22 will start negotiating for a nuclear power school class start date in Charleston, SC.

Dumb question:
Submarines are Boats?
Still working on my vernacular.
