Turned Down

My son went to Viewpoint (Calabasas) although we live in Studio City , Relatively close to West Hills. Not sure if its breaking a rule, but what HS did your son go to
It is not a rule breach to ask a personal question, but it is always a good idea for members to guard their privacy.

The internet is full of bad actors who can piece together bits of information and assemble a nearly complete profile.

Using the private conversation option is a safer way to exchange personal information between trusted members.

as I understand it, the USNA must take at least one student form each MoC.
Not quite accurate. USNA may take a nominated applicant from a MOC ONLY if the applicant is deemed 3Q by the Academy.

The MOCs nominate, they don't determine 3Q, only the SA does. And USNA, as a practice doesn't tell applicants if they are 3Q or not (unlike USMA).

Also, USNA is the only SA not required to offer an appointment to a principal nominee (We saw that happen during our DS's application cycle- young lady landed at USMA and is loving it).

Usually senators nominate more people. Im on a list as 5 whereas my friend who got a senator nomination is on a list of 10. It can be more competitive, and as I understand it, the USNA must take at least one student form each MoC. Your son is competing against the others on the list for an appointment. If they want to take more form the same list they can. For what
All of this crap has to do with the nominations usually. On your son's list of applicants there was probably someone better or a principal nominee. Out of curiosity did you son get a nom form a senator?

Sorry to hear
Respectfully, it’s not ‘cr@p’. It’s the nomination process and admissions process. You can read the stickies at the top of the nomination forum for more information.

In very basic terms, the slate of nominees, is who the SA gets to pick from (assuming fully qualified). Beyond the nom sources that the SA has control of. And it’s federally legislated.

But it’s not ‘cr@p’…

How did you know your DS was the principal nominee? I don't think that's something MoC usually release in my area.

I don't want to throttle down your enthusiasm but you are spreading misinformation. Both Senators and Congressmen have EXACTLY THE SAME nominating privileges including the ability to submit a slate of ten for EACH opening of which they will usually have one. Many Congressional districts do submit full slates of ten every year just as is the case for many Senators. You are on a slate of five in your district which is good for you. The district where I do interviews had more than thirty applicants seeking USNA nominations and a number of them had LOAs. Over the past few years when I've been participating, the only SA for which we did NOT nominate a slate of ten was USMMA.

His Senator called to tell him and her other principal nominee(she had two slates open). He also received a letter in the mail indicating that.

The nomination process is incredibly complex and legislated by Congress. It is a public document you can find and peruse if you so choose. And remember 535 MOC's can choose to rank, not rank, designate principal, call their nominees, write letters, throw luncheons to celebrate, do press releases or not. There is no ONE way that this is done-- beyond following the laws related to nominating applicants.

Not quite true. They must take a qualified candidate from each MOC. If they are all unqualified for some reason (eg DoDMERB) then none will be admitted. I doubt it's actually happened but in theory it could.
I don't doubt it has happened as I know that there are districts that have not been represented in entering classes at times. It could be no applicants just as it could be DoDMerb OR Academic Quals. For a district that is not competitive, if there are fewer than 10 applicants, even a knowledgeable MOC is quite likely to give a nom to an academically marginal candidate in hope that they might get sent to prep school.

"Old Navy BGO" provided great advice. I tell students all the time: Imagine your résumé with another year which includes successful college student, ROTC cadet, additional leadership opportunities and more. I hope your son will decide to re-apply next year. Best of luck to him!

Were those that were given an LOA as well as a Nomination all accepted?

Can you tell me where you can see the date and time your status is updated? Mine only says C-PR
