USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

When the puzzle is almost done, and just a few pieces are missing, Admissions even more carefully manages outstanding offers to accepted. When the acceotance deadline comes, they may offer some number (unknown) a place on a waitlist, to which they would offer the last few/unknown number of places in the class, which perhaps open up when someone changes their mind and declines after accepting, breaks a leg, whose medical does not clear satisfactorily, gets themselves arrested, etc. It is unknown how many will come off the waitlist - none, a few, some, many, a lot.

There will always be more stellar fully qualified candidates with noms than there are seats in the class.
Wow. Very interesting. What is the acceptance deadline? May 1?
Then those places on the waitlist would likely be given those few remaining slots.

Is there also a date dodmerbs needs to be satisfied by? Is it by I day or some other specific date.

Some version of the waitlist has been around a long time. It makes sense. Pre-identify a small group ready to come off the applicant bench should spots become open in the 30 days prior to I-Day.

Back in the 20th C, my DH horrified his parents by declining USMA and pinning his hopes on the “alternate” list he had been placed on by USNA. His other plans were NROTC at Penn or Northwestern. He got a call from USNA about a week or so before I-Day and 24 hours to call back with a decision. He accepted on the spot.

That might have put me in the ground. Sounds like they were determined to go NAVY.

It looks almost all of the appointees starting around may 10 were from the wait list. Do they soon after 4/15 form the wait list and put those applicants on notice they are waitlisted.

Or maybe you could summarize without absolutes how the waitlists works.

Apparently, the family story goes my DMIL was not best pleased. Offers came in by telegram (!) in those days. DH’s parents were away from home on a Saturday. USMA offer telegram was delivered to the door, and 17 year old DH replied by return telegram right then, “Respectfully decline” and name. Mentioned it to parents later after church the next day…. He was honored by the offer, but after a visit to USMA, he realized it was Navy and Navy air all the way for him. He got his wish.

Candidates come off the waitlist throughout May and June, up to a week before I-Day. We have personal friends that have been called the week or two weeks before reporting from the 1970s, 1980s, and recent years. It’s just a part of the process. USNA is building the class of future officers that the Navy and Marine Corps needs. It is truly a puzzle, not defined by stats, numbers, odds, patterns, rankings, etc.

Telegram! That was probably faster than snail mail. DM kept a copy of this in a scrap book I found after she passed. In the scrap book were airline ticket stubs, hotel brochures of the Maryland Inn as well as other USNA ephemera. She and Dad were early supporters of the Mid Store. I can see her making sure I checked the correct box :DThe gist of the letter still applies to the most recent appointees.

The majority of candidates will be informed before or on April 15 that they are appointed , TWE or Waitlisted. The status that you are waitlisted will be on the portal . Then waitlist candidates are notified that they are appointed, turned down or have received Foundation . Those notifications can go into June .

When waitlisted, they give a specific letter that explains the process. My kid got it last year. You must respond to admissions that you wish to stay on the list. It also states that if people are offered appointments off of it, do not expect to start hearing anything until mid-May.

Also, it is not a ranked list. The first people offered an appointment will come from open nomination buckets that the Academy is attempting to fill after people make their May 1st decisions. Generally, from the nom slate that an appointed candidate has declined.

OR, they may have been waitlisted while awaiting final medical remediation. I'm betting that was what happened to my kid, as his late medical DQ was settled after the 4/15 "deadline." My kid was first on the forum to report being appointed off the waitlist last year.

How would it work if you're appointed to 1 SA and wait listed on another?
The one you're wait listed is where you want to go as your 1st choice and you have to make a decision by May 1st?
I hope that makes sense?

Accept the appointment to the one you to which you are appointed. When you clear a waitlist, you can accept the new appointment and notify the other SA.

You're able to back out like that?
I thought once you accepted you're committed.

You’ll be told by admissions if you are on the waitlist. My daughter was waitlisted on April 11 last year and her status in her portal reflected that. She came off the waitlist and offered an appointment on May 25.
WOW! 6 more weeks of waiting was worth it. Congrats! I remember a parent saying on one of these threads his son was waiting to walk across the stage to receive his HS diploma when he was notified of his appointment. Can you imagine the bounce in that kid's step?

I love that story. It’s interesting also what forges their decisions in choosing where they want to go. BGO was the one person that put usna on my sons radar. (Radar designed by Sperry)

A little clarification on the waitlist appointments and MOC appointment slate.
For arguments sake an applicant gets waitlisted on April 17th. Said applicant received a nomination from congressman john smith. Congressman john smith ranks his own slate using the principle method. Said applicant who was waitlisted on the 17th was ranked #2 on Congressman smiths slate. Now on April 29th congressman smiths principle nomination declines the appointment.
Would the said applicant who was waitlisted and ranked #2 in the congressman smiths slate automatically get the principle nomination from congressman smith’s slate. Or
Might he never get the appointment
Or
Does the waitlist period change the rules on how the slates are handed out.
