Army ROTC 2023-2024 2nd Board

Can you imagine how many applicants the SAs would get if the process wasn't a complete pain in the.....
I feel the same way about ROTC, and I know it's not as bad as the academies.

BUT, there IS A REASON like 15,000 AROTC applications are started every year but only like 5,000 ever get boarded. It takes some effort to become "board ready" and if you aren't serious, or a good candidate, it can seem like not worth the effort to a lot of people.

Does anyone know the best way to provide new documents on physical assessment and updates to honors/leadership roles etc. after they were boarded in October. Everywhere I have read is that once they are graded you cannot change it and that score rolls into the next board. But lots of information for my kids has changed since Sept/Oct of last year when they submitted their packages. Thanks

I don’t believe there’s anyway to do so and that’s why it’s recommended for some people to wait for later boards, so that they may be able to get a higher board score.

The only things that are re-graded are SAT/ACT scores & PFA's I believe. I've resubmitted two new PFA's since the Oct board and they all have been approved. ROO's also have said it was good & showed dedication.

Cadet Command should do a better job advising applicants about the 1st board. If your resume isn't gleaming you should probably wait until the Jan board. We had no idea so few scholarships are awarded at the first board.

My partner says the opposite. He said it's important to have your application before the first Board so that it's seen as many times as possible. Even though the first Board tends to go to the Ivies, it still shows dedication to have the application done in time.

He said he did not see many four years go out in the third board.

And to think WE did it with telephones that were physically attached to the wall, a typewriter, and we were at the mercy of the U.S. Postal Service! Phone calls had to be made by COB on Friday or you were SOL until Monday!

As far as I understand your application is only seen once. If you get it in for first and you are deferred, you just get bumped up the OML. The idea that one should wait until second board comes from the theory that a middle-road candidate will feel more impressive against lower competition in the second board, so the board would rank you higher than you would’ve been after getting bumped up. But this is all speculation. You should get it in for first board so any issues with your documents can be sorted out.

I have been told that winning the scholarship doesn't influence the school's admissions process but I find that hard to believe.
I’m not sure if I believe that either…my DS got into an extremely competitive program at his first choice after he received the ROTC 4 year scholarship. And he’s pretty great, but even he admitted he wasn’t THAT great 😆.

The ROO at one of the senior military colleges was adamant that my DS should submit his application in October. I hope that turns out to be a good decision, but who knows.

The local news was looking for families to interview on the whole debacle and like a thousand people contacted the reporter to vent. And I don't think we're nearly out of the woods - they keep saying universities will have what they need by March - EEK - I'll believe it when I see it

The current FAFSA is one of the most incredibly ridiculous situations I've ever encountered. And that's saying something.

They really screwed that up big time.

I thought the current year FAFSA initial delay until 12/31 was only going to hurt kids that ED. It now seems that regular decision kids may have to decide on a school's offer without knowing what aid is available. Insane IMO.

If I remember correctly it takes about a week from the board to be notified as the list needs to be approved. The schools have a "look" and a say if they want someone that is to be boarded as well. Last year my son magically got in to schools and got the scholarships all within weeks of each other.

Yes, exactly.

A lot of schools are trying to provide preliminary aid estimates. If you were able to actually complete the form and received an estimated SAI, check with the financial aid office at your kids' school and see if they can use that estimated to provide an estimated aid package.

My kid is going to be on scholarship (Navy or Army) so it isn't really impacting us too much. Still... It's a nutroll!

That is one of the 3 main reasons why you see such consistent advice here not apply to first board. Make your best application, better match timing of board with admissions, and save yourself months of waiting.

Bummed we didn't get board results this week! I'm dreading another week of this stress and implusive brower-refreshing....

My son is in the midst of scheduling his DODMETS exams for West Point. Does anyone happen to know if those exams will be good for AROTC if he goes that direction? This has been a nightmare, and I'm really hoping we don't have to do this twice...

Yes, they will also work for AROTC. The only difference is that if a waiver is needed, they have different waiver authorities.

bethf - Did your son hear from all the schools on his list or just the top 3
I know at least three or four, he may have heard from all of them. But in addition, because I think units get lists of the winners, he had lots of other emails from schools he never applied to regarding the AROTC. The top three reached out to him in a more personalized way I feel like.
