‘25 PS so far

No, she reports she got scrambled eggs and waffles, too. I appreciate your help. I have a background in plant based nutrition, so my plebe's diet, especially while she's sick, is concerning to me. Please have a wonderful day.
I hope your girl gets released from the sick rooms! mine was there for 3 days and she said the food was not great but she was not really hungry bc of the plebe hack - she slept and read books her detailer gave her for 3 days and then went back and is fine now. hopefully yours will get better soon - mine said the food is amazing in king hall! and she has gained weight! cant imagine gaining weight with all the running they do!!!

PPW is indeed a light, but not the end of the tunnel. More like a false summit. DD said the day after her PPW was not pleasant — at least for the plebes.
The reality is , PPW is a nice respite, but not even a false summit. In the big scheme of things, Plebe Summer is just a small foothill on the USNA journey, and in many ways its the easiest part. Plebe Year is even harder -- instead of facing a relative handful of Detailers, the Upperclass to Plebe ratio becomes 3:1, and Plebes have to deal with a pretty rigorous collegiate class load in addition to military training. While some of the military training pressures ease off after Plebe year, the academic pressures increase, and I don't think any Midshipman is truly relieved until they throw their hat up in the air at graduation. Just like the Admissions process, this is a marathon -- not a sprint.

Rollercoaster #1: Admissions process, with all kinds of loops called CFA, nominations, DoDMERB, etc.
Rollercoaster #2: Plebe Summer. But wait, you stay on board, more cars are added, the climbs are longer and higher, the descents are dizzier, and you realize you’re on…
Rollercoaster #3: Plebe Year
Rollercoaster #4: the other years
Rollercoaster #5: at least five years in uniform, plus bonus rollercoaster in training pipelines.

Great update!
My DS is a second set detailer and is going through extensive training and transition briefings now. He said the first set detailers are exhausted and ready to hand over the plebes. Second set are well prepared to take over. From DS experience, I remember the let down when the first set left and second arrived. It wasn’t long before plebes adjusted to new detailers and notched a successful transition.
The ball game is a great outing for plebes and DS is sad to miss it as it’s a bit earlier than usual. You’ll likely be rewarded with your first picture of your son in whites! Enjoy the moment! Still one of my favorite pics of DS.
My DD is a first set detailer and her whole detail group succumbed to plebe hack last weekend and she was the only holdout until today. They are tired! Up before the plebes and to sleep after they put the plebes to bed to review and plan and on the go all day long. Lots of marching and drilling. With the OIC being a marine, she tells us that the training is different than she had last year. She is able to do things she didn't last summer as a Plebe (museum, fireworks, baseball game) She finds it crazy to be working alongside those that trained her last year and she is honored to be accepted as one of them. She is sad to transition off but ready as she is exhausted!

Oh, this is encouraging. So glad to hear your girl has healed! Thank you so much for confirming SIQ room food is not the same as King Hall. Mine did not get books. She's written me lots, though. I even got drawings of the view from her window!

Firsties- I'm going to miss it here (how do you do laundry?)
I must have missed that one. I never thought I'd miss USNA !
First Class year was pretty cool. Although there are challenges, by then you are used to them, and you are pretty much at the top of the world until you become an Ensign and go back to the bottom all over. The next peak was a Fleet LT, fully qualified, and a crew holding TACCO/MC on a Junior Officer crew.

I wouldn't focus on milestones as being the finish line per se (PS, Plebe Year, first couple of years, first four years, etc etc etc.) However it's a way, actually it is THE way, to eat the elephant- one evolution at a time. Mentally, completely acceptable and actually encouraged because if you sit on day 1, 10, 30, 60, 90, 365 etc and focus on the next 3285+ days you are screwed. Agree, it's a marathon, but in a marathon you don't run it by thinking about the next 26, 25, 24 miles- you break it down into mentally digestible intervals. In reality, you just do it- not to be cliche (again and again). Parents probably should be cognizant (but not dwell on) the entire commitment, I am not sure that a MIDN, Sailor, or Marine should spend that much time on that broad of focus (but they MUST be cognizant of how their performance etc will or will not open doors or provide opportunities down the road).

A great exercise of what they might (should) experience in the fleet- I recall my officers being up before me, performing along side me, eating after me, and going to bed after me.

Is she 2024? I have heard things are different and I think that’s great for everyone….nobody ever gets complacent with “the way things are done”, always evolving!

I guess what I wanted to hear was that there are plenty of fruits and vegetables available for those that want them, and when she's well enough to go down to King Hall herself she'll be able to get them. I know there is nothing I can do, but I would like to know that USNA is offering something more than meat and rice. Does anyone know if this is the case?
Follow @admiral_ernieking (official page of MFSD) on IG if you really want to see what they eat. They eat VERY well during plebe summer. Last year? Everything was mostly cold, in a styrofoam box. Staff had to absorb all the “extras” that COVID required, cost wise, in their budget. And they got through it.

The Director of all this, the person in charge, has more money to work with going forward (heard him speak at a conference last fall). Increased money per Mid than ever before. He was a two sport athlete during his time at USNA (track and football), and is very aware of the nutritional needs of EVERYONE. Honestly, compared to colleges across the country, that I’ve been involved with, it’s quite impressive. They feed 4K plus Midshipmen, family style, 3 times a day. All at the same time (other than last year). Amazing.

There are fresh fruits and veggies galore. Salad bar. Protein stations during the day (pick up ‘free’ bars, shakes, etc). I think this next year they will see some positive dining changes (discussed in a recent training).

Beyond that? Mids can order their own deliveries a via doordash, or from local grocery store, beyond plebe summer. Or sponsor parents can deliver.

Food is not an issue. She won’t suffer from a lack of fruits and veggies during her SIQ. Which means someone is picking up a to-go meal for them. It OK. Don’t worry. You can spoil them during parents week. Especially if food is your love language ♥️

BTW…speaking of plant based foods, a chickpea Buffalo burger was recently featured on the King Hall Instagram. As a permanent addition to the menu.

Just a note on something I heard last week when visiting the yard...not sure who told me though.

but this year the budget for food in king hall went up to 22$ per Midshipman (from 17$)...could just be a rumor or something though

Not a rumor. And 17$ was also an increase. So two increases in a short time. Food is to be substantially better than it has been. And “special meals” will increase if they can get their waste numbers down. Which they also have a plan for. This was all addressed in the Fall conferenece, (for Parent clubs….join yours for more info), and a recent training I attended. So it’s true, not rumor.

My DD reports the food is tons better. Her words and I quote, " I am in heaven." Mind you she only has last year's clamshells to compare to but I never thought I'd hear those words about the food. 😂

I can only imagine what LCDR Neeb could have done with $22 a day. 86 the "Neeb's Loaf" and the "Tom Ray's Hot Brown Sandwiches" for sure.

I think we were at around $12/Mid. King Hall food is so much better than I went through. So many more options and nutrition factors are definitely evaluated more heavily. The times I have eaten there over the years, especially the last few, I have been in shock to the difference. All good changes.

So when does the "Where's my Plebe in this photo" wain? Since the Yard has been open for all visitors during PS '25, FB and IG are full of parents posting video's/photos and my DW spends time everyday scouring these for daily "proof of life". Add to FB/IG, the Alumni photo site (which I am not sure was a good investment of $) and the USNA Flickr site, considerable time is spent looking for DS and then worrying when DS is not to be found. If by chance DS is caught in a video or photo, most of the time it is from a distance and not directly. Don't get me wrong on the few occasions we have gotten a really a good picture or video I am excited as well. However I am coming to terms with the unknown and the delay between snail mail notes. I also realize the Class of '24 PS did not have this luxury but I wonder if maybe that was better??? As discussed many times, they are in controlled environment intended to make them succeed. Also those that go off to boot camps or basic camps don't have the paparazzi's around and survive.

Next phone call home is 4 days away and PPW is 2 weeks from now! Don't give up the ship!
