We have not received notification that he received a nomination from our state reps or senators. Could he possibly have been nominated without us knowing it? By definition of candidate on the usafa website it seems he must have gotten a nomination. So is just a step away from appointment? Thanks for any info.

actually correction. "Candidate" status means that they have reviewed your app and considered you "competitive". that doesnt mean you have a nom. that part says that you could have received a nom, but they havent appointed you to "candidate" status because they dont consider you competitive. that doesnt work the opposite way. so, candidate status means your competitve whether you have nom or not. if you have a nom, that doesnt secure "candidate" status. see how it works?? im not very good at describing it thoroughly.

as far as having a nom without knowing, the chances are highly unlikely but that doesnt mean you dont. If you have a nom and the USAFA recognizes you have it, it will be posted under your nomination status section of the website. it will say who your source is and under status say: nomination received...i believe. so to find out, call your nominating sources before you call USAFA.

If you take a look at the fine print just below the first section, it will give the definition of what the status implies. If he was nominated but did not recieve direct word for the nominators, it would still show up on the online app. page. It will be under "nomination status".

As for what the status of candidate "Should USAFA deem you competitive and/or you receive a nomination, you will become a "Candidate." Note that you may recieve a nomination and still not be deemed competitive by USAFA." So if your son has not recieved a nomination, it shows that he has a good chance to be offered an appointment (although if it doesn't say there is a nomination, I'm not sure what that would mean in the terms of an appointment). However, if it is candidate and there is a nomination, don't worry too much yet. The mass mailings still need to go out so there is still time.

Thanks for the good info. I checked nomination status and it says "none". So.....that means he is competitive just no nom. That still sounds very encouraging. My son is away this weekend and does not know his status has been changed to candidate. I hate to get his hopes up but mine sure are. Thanks again for deciphering it for me. And a hearty congrats to all. You are so deserving.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but all nominations should have been submitted by senators and representatives by the end of January and would have been posted by now. The only nominator still available is the VP nomination unless your son also qualifies for the Presidential. Deadlines to request nominations in these categories have passed.

Anyone get a copy of contrails? I just ordered one on the AOG website. We're basically going to have to know everything in that book right?

they remake it every year, so it is almost useless to buy a copy

also, you dont want to know too much, because then you are the center of their bulls-eye

DON'T BE THAT GUY! If you memorize most of it before you get there, all you'll do is make the rest of us look semi-bad and you'll get a target on your back that won't quit. I ordered a copy a while ago, it's interesting to read through but don't start memorizing. I've actually hidden mine and conveniently forgot where it is so I won't make my fellow squadmates hate me.

The best use i've had for it is just as a reference for aircraft. I'm headed to the National Student Congress tournament June 14-19 (so no summer for me!) partly because I used that as a reference with a few Air Force magazines to defend a resolution I introduced to provide funding for new aircraft.

So yeah, if you want to just take a look through it, fine. but don't memorize stuff... or else!!:hammer:

Memorizing stuff ahead of time not only makes you and your classmates look bad, it defeats a lot of what BCT is for.

LoL not only do I have horrible memory but I'm even worse under pressure. If you end up being in my squadron you WANT me to start memorizing, otherwise get used to doing push-ups and whatever else!

But seriously, I expect to enjoy my senior year without thinking about beast as much as possible so...pray you're not in my squadron! hahah:thumb:

There will always be those (many) who have photographic memories at the Academy and will memorize the "book" pretty quickly. If you don't have one, it doesn't hurt to get a head start. What the upperclassmen will expect is that if you have it memorized is that you're helping your classmates so that the unit arrives at the finish line together...being a standout won't do you any good unless you are a team player.

hahahaha.
Don't be that guy.

Won't help you one bit in beast nor will it makes things any easier. (quite the contrary).
If you do know some stuff, help your teammates learn it so that y'all can recite it as one unit. But seriously, knowledge during beast is really not one of the big concerns..

Doolie year however is where knowledge and contrails come into play. ( we didn't use contrails until the academic year started....)

you wont even open contrails during basic. you'll use it a bit in the ac year.. it makes NO sense to get one and memorize now. none at all. you'll learn everything with your classmates, which is how (i think) it should be. some are just good at memorizing.. get them to help you. knowledge isnt a huge huge thing in basic. you'll screw up just like everyone else..

as nearly everyone has said

DONT BE THAT GUY

:)

I'd have to say that it would not hurt in the least to memorize a few things like the 7 basic responses. Yes Sir, No Sir, Sir I do not know, Sir I do not understand, No excuse sir, Sir may I make a statement, and Sir may I ask a question. (or Ma'am for those) It seems to me that would be one thing to memorize that will make life easier for all of us!
