Thank you for putting these together, EEBTTF. Last year there were seven AFROTC boards, are they only holding three boards this year? Does this suggest that fewer applicants will be accepted this year?

Based on the information that I have seen, it appears that they are reducing the number of boards to 3.

While it may be true, as I don't know, I wouldn't make that assumption. They might plan on getting more awarded at each board. Note the last two boards are somewhat late in the cycle so they may want to allow the pool to develop more before having many boards. There could be lots of logical reasons.

Thank you for this! I’m experienced with AFROTC with my oldest and now my youngest is applying NROTC. We were talking about deadlines the other day and he mentioned getting everything submitted well before the first board.

complete the best application possible prior to the first board is a good idea, but be sure it's the best application possible. If one misses a board or two it's no big deal.... but earlier is better (if any of this even makes sense.... tradeoffs).

I am not sure how the AFROTC boards work, but there was a lot of discussion last year regarding the timing of submitting your AROTC application. You are only boarded 1 time for AROTC. You can submit changes (test scores...), but you are only boarded once. @Montana State Army ROTC had some really good posts about submitting your "best possible" application. For AROTC, the 1st Board is very competitive and I think it hurts your chances if you rush to submit an application that is not your best effort.

I don't think it matters as much for the NROTC-MO Board. Historically the 1st Board selects a very small number and the 2nd Board a much higher number. I don't know if the final numbers are out yet, but I heard there was 250+/- MO scholarships awarded this year. That seems low compared to other years.

Since he’s already taken his SAT and ACT, he won’t have to wait for that. Application submission will probably be dependent on his PFT scores. His teachers have already asked about deadlines for submission, so I’m glad he’s already in contact with them about that.
I honestly don’t know what the application entails, but my son is usually on the ball about these kind of things.

Good luck. Is your DS pursuing the MO Scholarship?

No he isn’t. He has this strange fascination with subs and wants to be a nuclear engineer. ;)
If he is not successful with his NROTC scholarship application, he may want to look into the NUPOC (Navy Nuclear Propulsion Officer Candidate) program. He can apply while still in college and receive scholarship money to help pay for college through this program. Of course joining NROTC as a college programmer and seeking a side load scholarship or Advanced Standing is also a solid plan B.

Good general guidelines for the MO-NROTC boards, but keep in mind each Recruiting District convenes at slightly different dates, and releases results at staggered intervals too. For the MO application, I allow all my applicants to continue retaking their PFT, submit updated transcripts and test scores, and provide additional letters of recommendation (not necessary) up to the deadline for the board convening dates in order to ensure the best possible package. I cannot speak for each RS, however, and the best advice I can give is communicate early and often with your assigned RS and recruiter.

In reference to the AFROTC boards, does anyone have the information if an application only boards once? Thanks!

My understanding is that for all services applications are only boarded once. That being said, one must understand the technical meaning of boarding in this sense. Boarding means the board looks at the application and scores it. It's then placed in a stack of other boarded applications. At the end of the board the top x scored applications are awarded scholarships. The stack is retained for the remaining boards. Additional applications get added at the next board, and the remaining top y (including older applications from previous boards) are awarded a scholarship. Your score can be changed between boards by quantitative measurements (eg improved SAT/ACT scores), but it's never scored by the board again.

So, although an application is "boarded" only once, each board considers the application for a scholarship at the end of the scoring. This is why folks say to submit the best application you possibly can, as early as you can put that application together. If you submit too soon you will perhaps lose some "qualitative" points that you can't get back later, like you can "quantitative" like SAT and ACT.

I may have over-simplified, but that's essentially the process as I understand it. It works as a model in my head anyway.

No, it can be rolled over into the next board if they decide to do so.

Pima has said: "Now, here is the thing. It is a queue system. They will meet for X amount of hours, and if they don't get through all of them, than the remaining applicants will go to the top of the pile to be reviewed at the next board."

Yes, that's true. I suppose I should have said there are two stacks. One unscored (which is the stack you are referring to), and the other one (which I expanded on) are the scored applications.

I believe the latest is October 15th.
Do you mean October 15th for when the interview score is submitted by the interviewing detachment? I am pretty sure the AFROTC application on the wings website is submitted to get an interview date and is not the finished application that would be reviewed by the board.
