It is that time of the year! Time to start the 2024 USMMA Appointment Thread as some LOAs have been received. HOW TO ADD YOUR INFORMATION--this is self-reporting, self-updating do-it-yourself list. Here is how it works: copy the most recent list, paste into a new post, add a line at the bottom with the next appointment number, enter your info in a similar format as below, and then post. Update as needed by the same process of copying the most recent list into a new post and updating whatever information as needed.

FORMAT:
x Number) SA Forum Handle / Self, DS, or DD / Date Notified of Appointment / Accepted, Declined or Undecided / State / Nomination source(s) (Congressional or Senatorial etc.) / Direct Appointment (from High School), Prep School, College Re-Applicant, etc.) / LOA (if applicable)

EXAMPLE:

1) USMMA2024 / Self / Oct 15 / Accepted / NY / Senatorial / Direct Appointment / LOA

That's it! Congratulations to the upcoming USMMA Class of 2024!

Congratulations to klcm54a and RowingMom on the appointments. What a relief to have them in hand so early in the admissions cycle! Please let me know if you have any questions that might help you decide your undecided status.

DS applied to all academies and wants to consider all options before commitment. He is super excited to receive this offer and his demeanor changed because he does not need all the plan B options now since he will gratefully accept this offer if no others are available.

2) USMMA2024 / DS/ Oct 23 / Undecided/ AK/ TBD/ Direct Appointment / LOA
I was just following the discussion in the other thread - has an actual offer of appointment been made, or it’s LOA (yay, but not the Big YAY) in hand right now? This thread helps track actual offers of appointment made, so people can see when the appointment offers start getting handed out. SAs don’t make the actual offer until all conditions are satisfied, and they have a candidate who is qualified in every respect, including having a nom in hand.

It’s always fun to watch the list of actual appointments grow!

AKFutureFrogman21' you are mistaken about any state having a set number of appointments per year. That is definitely not how the system works. It is much more complicated than that.

Each nominating source is allowed ten nominations for each of the four academies (USCGA excluded) for each opening from that state. Recently, a MIDN from your state left USMMA, so that should leave your Congressman the opportunity for additional nominations.

Here is a cut & paste from the website. Correct me if I am wrong - I think this means that if a state doesn't fill their slots, it is possible to have candidates from other states receive appointments based on paragraph #2.

Someone help! I recall a pdf upload that showed the allowed # per state, but I now I can't find it or remember what thread....If anyone has a copy or can find it, please post!

Appointments
Candidates are appointed competitively by the Academy for the vacancies allocated to their state or geographical area. Each state has an assigned number of appointees proportionate to its representation in Congress. After the Academy has selected its principal appointees, the remaining qualified candidates will be designated as alternates to be appointed in order of merit should openings occur within their states.

In the event that a state fails to satisfy its allotment, appointments to fill the unfilled vacancies are determined from the national list of alternates, ranked in order of merit as described above. A candidate's competitive standing is established by test scores on the standardized SAT I or ACT examination, high school class rank, academic record, evidence of leadership potential, interest in a maritime career, letters of recommendation, and other factors that are considered effective indicators of motivation and probable completion of training. Bonus points are awarded to candidates with at least six months of sea service aboard merchant or naval vessels.

To elaborate on my point, my understanding is that you are first competing with the other nominees from Alaska for the quota of two spots, but if you are not selected for an appointment from that group, then you are placed in the National Pool and are competing for the remaining available spots in the authorized number of appointments for your class year. So theoretically, there could be more appointments offered from your state (or any other state) out of the national pool. Unlike the DoD academies, there are several differences with Kings Point. There are no Presidential or Vice-Presidential nominations at USMMA. Also, a candidate may apply to any Representative in his or her state for a nomination unlike the rule for DoD academies where you are limited to your own district.

From the source, 46USC 513:

(c) Allocation of Positions.—Positions for competitive appointments shall be allocated each year as follows:

(1) Positions shall be allocated for residents of each State nominated by the Members of Congress from that State in proportion to the representation in Congress from that State.

(2) Four positions shall be allocated for residents of the District of Columbia nominated by the Delegate to the House of Representatives from the District of Columbia.

(3) One position each shall be allocated for residents of the Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa nominated by the Delegates to the House of Representatives from the Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa, respectively.

(4) One position shall be allocated for a resident of Puerto Rico nominated by the Resident Commissioner to the United States from Puerto Rico.

(5) One position shall be allocated for a resident of the Northern Mariana Islands nominated by the Governor of the Northern Mariana Islands.

(6) Two positions shall be allocated for individuals nominated by the Panama Canal Commission.

(d) Competitive System for Appointment.—

(1) Establishment of system.—The Secretary shall establish a competitive system for selecting individuals nominated under subsection (b) to fill the positions allocated under subsection (c). The system must determine the relative merit of each individual based on competitive examinations, an assessment of the individual's academic background, and other effective indicators of motivation and probability of successful completion of training at the Academy.

(2) Appointments by jurisdiction.—The Secretary shall appoint individuals to fill the positions allocated under subsection (c) for each jurisdiction in the order of merit of the individuals nominated from that jurisdiction.

(3) Remaining unfilled positions.—If positions remain unfilled after the appointments are made under paragraph (2), the Secretary shall appoint individuals to fill the positions in the order of merit of the remaining individuals nominated from all jurisdictions.

Well hopefully that works in my favor this year. My last opportunity...

I apologize I was confused by the instructions referencing the LOA’s- I was planing to wait to post until I saw other share. Your right, it’s not the big yay yet as the senators and congressman in Florida have not made selections. So technically DS is only LOA and not an appointment. Doesn’t look like I can edit though and retract.

As we have had clarification on the 2024 USMMA APPOINTMENT DIY thread regarding LOAs, may I suggest we START OVER and only those holding actual offers of Appointment add their information to the list, beginning from here on out?

Since no actual offers of appointment are in hand just yet, the first reported 2024 Appointment entry after this post should be 1). Let’s hope the LOA recipients above are able to complete their requirements and soon report their offers of Appointment!
