2025 USNA Permit to Report Letter

For those who got “zero hour,” I say go for it! You likely won’t be able to sleep anyway. Might as well start your military career as early as you can. 😉

DD’s reporting time was 0600 and she was grateful for that. Made for a long day, but it beat hanging around elsewhere, letting the tension and angst and nervousness build up. She was up at 0500, had a small bite to eat, and then we double-timed it to Alumni Hall from Eastport. She set the pace and we followed. She probably would’ve been fine reporting at “0.”

By the way, it’s been said that one can lurk outside Alumni Hall before their reporting time and find themselves “sucked” into the building along with the regularly scheduled tide. No one will turn you away for being early.

My DS received his this morning and it is also 6/29 at 1200...which happens to be my 50th Birthday!!! 😭😭😭
Just think of it as embarking on your Second Half Century of Excellence. Or the 20th anniversary of your 30th birthday.

Just a suggestion here, we did go ahead and get DS a passport prior to reporting, it was listed as optional. I didn't anticipate him doing international travel for a few years at best BUT, opportunity knocked and DS answered.

He text me from the airport, thanking us for getting him the passport.

The LREC (research, language, culture, education travel) is sanctioned by USNA but they aren't traveling under orders so his CAC card may not have cut it. He said the passport meant it was smooth sailing and he didn't cause a delay in their trip.

+10 to @Heatherg21 advice re passport. I believe every semi-intrepid adult — and certainly those headed for SA — should have a passport when they leave for college. You just never know when an international opportunity might come up, be it an LREC or spring break in Cancun. Life’s so much easier when you don’t have to scramble through State Department bureaucracy with a deadline looming. Suggest if DD/DS lacks a passport, start the process now while it’s easy to do the paperwork and get the photo.

Agreed. Plebes are urged to come with a passport in hand, but they don't have to. They will fill out an application and get their photo taken on I-Day if they don't already have a passport.

Our son has visited six (6) different countries (on the government's dime) since he's been a MIDN.
Join the Navy, see the world. Get a passport now, if you can.

Also, our DS made a copy of all of his identifying papers (ie, social security card, license, birth certificate) and left them at home in the safe, one set on a portable hard drive with him locked in his con locker. He did the same with his entire PTR. That pesky background clearance document will be filled out over and over again during their career and having those dates, names and addresses handy will be invaluable.

DS is planning on taking his passport but I heard from another parent that there are companies on I-Day known to trash whatever new plebe brings... I hope this isn’t true? Otherwise, I might bring it Parent plebe weekend...

They get a lockable space to secure personal items. “Con locker.”
If you bring it PPW, it’s one less thing to carry.

Dang I’ve never had a +10 before. Thanks @MidCakePa

I hope that is not the case. Trashing someone's belongings - in particular a passport - doesn't seem like behavior we expect of the officers they are supposed to become!
