3Q on NWL

I just got my letter that I have 3Q status but am on the NWL. I’m not sure if I should be happy or bummed about this! My 7th semester grades are looking good, so I hope they will help.
Questions:
Can I retake the CFA and see if that would help my score? They said to keep updating the application with any new information, but I am not sure if that includes a better CFA.
Is the NWL published anyplace for to me see where I am on the list?
Are appointments to the Prep School pulled from the candidates who don’t get appointments to USMA from the NWL?
Thanks.

When did you submit your 7th semester transcript? Our semester doesn't end till tomorrow so I'm waiting until the transcript will be ready in like 3 weeks. Also, did your CFA turn green? Mine's yellow for almost two months now. Everything else is submitted.

I don't think you can retake the CFA unless they make you retake it.

I have not submitted my 7th sem yet. It ends Friday.
I didn’t think I could retake the CFA. Thanks!

I will try to answer regarding the NWL, the CFA retake is a question for the Regional Commander. Do you have a nomination? If you do I would guess that you did not win the MOC slate and since you are 3Q you are put on the NWL. There is no way to know where you are on the list. Since you are 3Q you will not be considered for USMAPS. The vast majority of applicants are on the NWL and USMA fills the class mostly from this list so hang in there, 3Q with a nomination is a good place to be. Your 7th semester transcript can give you more WCS points which will improve your standing on the NWL. Good luck.

I certainly wouldn’t be bummed. If I got a TWE, then I would be bummed. Otherwise, still in the game.

Unless you’ve been asked specifically to do so, no. If you haven’t heard from admissions re CFA, you passed.

You are not being punished. Nor is the NWL published. It’s for admissions’s eyes only.

In your 3Q letter it also said you were on the NWL?

Thanks! I do have a nomination. I will keep fighting the good fight!

  • EVERY 3Q candidate is placed on the NWL. The letter means that your are qualified, "and on the NWL", not "but on the NWL." It is not like getting placed on the waitlist of a civilian college, which is often simply a soft rejection.
  • Because of the way appointments are issued, knowing your order on the list has little meaning unless you are near top.
  • If you are on the NWL, you passed the CFA. I do not believe you can retake the CFA once you have passed it, but that is a question for your RC. There may be exceptions.

Are 3Q+LOA also put on NWL? It's basically finding a NOM ( either for someone who has one, but could not qualify on the slate or for someone who could not find a NOM)

I don't think that letter means you didn't win your slate. Mine said the same thing when I had one nom (JROTC) and a month later I received 2 more. I believe that letter is sent to anyone who is 3Q, slate winner or not.

ALL qualified candidates are placed on the NWL. This includes slate winners, those appointed as Qualified Alternates, Additional Appointees, etc., and those that end up without appointments.

Receiving a 3Q letter is a really good thing and the only pertinent information in the letter is the "Qualified" part. Every qualified candidate is supposed to get one, but sometimes timing and administrative glitches result in not getting one or getting an appointment first - these candidates then mistakenly believe they were not on the NWL.

One idiosyncrasy of government, particularly the military - terms which seem to have obvious meaning, often mean something else. The NWL is not a wait list as civilian colleges use the term, even though it contains the words "wait list". It is a list of all candidates qualified for appointment who wait in a holding pattern until receiving an appointment or TWE.

Two terms that cause confusion are "National Wait List" and "Rolling Admissions." Translated to civilian speak, USMA uses neither. This is for USMA. Other SA's may operate differently - for example, USNA does use rolling admissions.

Mine just turned green on January.14 after over a month of waiting. I’ve read that a few other candidate’s CFAs have turned green recently. It should be coming soon, assuming there are no issues with form.

Mine turned green on the 12th. It was pending for about a month.

When you say ALL qualified applicants are placed on the NWL, do you mean someone who is 3Q but without their MOC nomination is also placed on the NWL. Would that mean if their WCS score is within the top 150 they would be given an appointment?

No one gets an appointment without a nomination. Nomination is not required to be 3Q, but is for appointment.

An example from a civilian college may help understand what the NWL is. I spoke with the admissions director of an elite university. In his words: "We have far too many applications to read all of them. We set a cutoff score based on objective criteria - test scores, grades, etc. Those below the cutoff go directly into the cue for rejection letters, with no further review. Those above the cutoff are reviewed further and some will be accepted, some rejected, and some wait-listed."

The NWL is similar to the applications in this example that are above the cutoff score - the NWL is not a wait list. It is a list of candidates that meet minimum standards and may be considered further for appointment - some will be appointed, some will get a TWE. Those that do not meet the minimum standards will be cued immediately for a TWE.
