What are you doing special?

My Dad can finally walk correctly after two knees surgeries.

I have been walking him into the ground visiting Civil War battlefields this spring and summer.

We are meeting up at Gettysburg July 3rd to follow the path of Pickett's charge.

I would def drink first! What could go wrong?
Famous last words... "Here, hold my beer....."

Resuming our customary 4th party with old neighbors. Been a couple years and fewer people this year (invites went out late since our deck was under repair ). Our City fireworks are only a couple blocks away, so we usually walk over and see them. (Reminding me...about 11 years ago my English cocker was a puppy, and I was afraid the fireworks would scare here and make her gunshy -- I took her out and had her chase dummies through the whole show and she loved it so much the fireworks didn't bother her. This year, almost 12 and near deaf, I wonder if she will even hear them .

I’ll take deliveries, cocktails welcome. DH had shoulder replacement surgery Wed, came home yesterday. I am Chief sling adjuster, Rx dispenser, food delivery runner, ice circulation machine tech, etc. I stocked up on frozen protein bowls, lean cuisines, my own frozen soups, etc., because the port-and-port watchstanding the first week is exhausting. I usually look forward to gorging on my first Eastern Shore sweet white corn of the season, hand-cranked ice cream, favorite grilled things, etc. I’ll be deferring a bit
Pity party over. A quiet 4th for us, best wishes to all for an enjoyable weekend.

Hoping and praying for a speedy recovery. Pro Tip: He will be milking this one. ;-)

DBIL, the other retired naval aviator captain in the family, had his done 2 years ago by the same Johns Hopkins “the shoulder guy.” They gave us gouge; I will be happy to share gouge via PM when you are ready.

Allowing myself to be driven crazy by misuse of "the 4th" as the name for our holiday. The holiday is Independence Day, it has that name for a specific reason, hint: there's a founding document with a similar name. Every time people refer to it as the calendar reference it diminishes the significance of why we celebrate it.

This is going to sound crazy, but every year I spend a few minutes and read the Declaration of Independence as a holiday ritual. It reminds me why we are an Independent people, that all of humanity has natural, unalienable rights (life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness) granted to us by our Creator. As humankind we institute governments and empower them only by our consent, as those who are governed. As a free and independent people, we should always be vigilant against those who would seek to deprive us of those rights. It is our responsibility to defend those rights for future generations. We should be willing to pledge our lives, our fortunes and our sacred honor for that cause.

So I challenge you to take on that same simple five minute ritual and read the document (here's a link: Declaration of Independence at National Archives). Then ask yourself why would anyone call it the 4th, when doing so rings as hollow as referring to Christmas as "winter holiday" or simply as "December 25th".

Rant over... stepping off the soapbox.

Happy Independence Day to all!

Going to run across an open field in incredible heat while facing Union grapeshot and musket fire? Sounds like a hoot!

Which of our holidays feature people actually honoring the day it is named after? Labor Day? President's Day? Memorial Day? They're all just a day off with pay.

Just got done kayaking a lake with the hubs.

It’s sure different without kiddos around.

Watched our local fireworks 🎆 on tv…always the Friday before Independence Day.

I hope it's hot. Always wanted to be there on July 3rd and walk across. DS wanted to bring his ruck sack and double time it across.

Afterwards we might pick out a specific area of the battlefield and explore.

Not doing anything except missing DD2 who is acclimating to Swab Summer and enjoying DD1's brief leave before she heads off to Panama City for 2 blocks of dive school.

Should be required ritual for all Americans, citizens or otherwise. I’m going to do it myself. We need to remind ourselves — or perhaps learn for the first time — how radical the Founding Fathers’ idea was. They risked their lives and fortunes, committing treason of the highest level, because they believed the people and not a dynasty should rule nations. It was not an end for them, but a beginning for us. And we must keep building on their legacy.

As for our celebration: barbecue pork ribs with my secret rub (because this is ‘Merica, dang it); cabbage slaw with radishes and apples; baked beans with bacon (looking at you, @THParent); and grilled corn on the cob.

For aperitif: Manhattans made with Kentucky rye (tribute to the pathfinder Daniel Boone); pastis (tribute to our French allies); and Pimm’s cup (as a peace offering to our good friend and guest who’s English by birth).

For dessert: cherries and an ice-cream cake from DQ (because what could be more ‘Merican than DQ?). Here’s to liberty! 🇺🇸🎆🇺🇸🎇🇺🇸
