Accept ROTC?

If my son has already accepted his service academy appointment, is there any reason to accept AFROTC or NROTC scholarships? I know that they are back-up plans, but that is only until you find out that you have an academy appointment or not, correct? Once you have accepted your appointment, there is really no need for the ROTC back-up because if something happened where you had an injury that DQ'd you from the service academy, wouldn't that also DQ you from being able to use a ROTC scholarship?

Depends on the injury. If it's possible that the injury will be severe enough to prompt an Academy turnback, but not so bad that there is time to heal to allow ROTC participation, then accepting the scholarship MIGHT make sense to some people.

On the USAFA portal for all the paperwork, it states :
NOTE: If you have also received a scholarship from Air Force ROTC, you must notify them that you have decided to attend USAFA and officially decline the scholarship offer. You must notify Air Force ROTC before you arrive at USAFA for in-processing.

You cannot maintain ROTC as Plan B or a backup plan to a service academy once arrive on I-Day.

Good to know - that's what I was thinking that I had read - that as soon as they report on I-day the ROTC scholarships are null and void. Thanks for confirming.

So I guess he could accept as a back-up until I-day but once I-day hits, then he would need to rescind them anyways....

As soon as he takes the oath, the scholarship is automatically rescinded.

That's correct. but by then it is definitely not needed.
BTW - I'm not arguing one way or the other, just pointing out some rationales for accepting the scholarship.
