Admission Waiver

Hello, I’m a 20 year old enlisted corpsman at my first sea duty station. I want to attend USNA, but I will turn 23 before the July 1 of the year of admission due to me going on predeployment workups and deployment itself. Can I get an age waiver to extend until I’m 24 after deployment?

Probably not.

I highly recommend calling USNA Admissions and asking for the senior enlisted leader (usually a Chief or Senior Chief) who handles enlisted applicants from the Fleet. Discuss with him or her how many applicants he has seen coming from an initial sea duty tour, and how that works at the command level. Some come right from A school, but I am sure some come direct from sea duty.

It’s highly likely you would be sent to the Naval Academy Prep School (NAPS) first, so that backs it up another year.

Read everything, page, dropdown, link, on USNA.edu and organize your questions, and call. You can also email.

Be ready to talk about your HS grades and any standardized test scores.

There are also many other routes to gaining a degree and a commission, if that’s what you want. Talk to the Command Career Counselor.

Meanwhile, be the best Sailor you can be, sharp in uniform, volunteering for collateral duties, being a good shipmate, with stellar evals and PRT, and zero misconduct or performance issues. No drinking underage, no boneheaded liberty incidents, no XOI, no Captain’s Mast.

Bet you hear from @DevilDoc soon...

It's my understanding that age is a legal requirement (written into the law) and thus is not waiverable. However, agree that you should confirm with USNA.

Also, if you're 20 now, you still have time. You may need to decide between completing your deployment, etc. and applying to USNA. As Capt. MJ says, the Senior Chief is your best point of contact. Suggest you contact him/her sooner rather than later, so that you have the most available options.

Im still looking at my timeline and it looks like the current timeline for deployment will have me completing my package on the ship. I don’t know if that’s doable but I’ll talk with my career counselor and admissions.
