hey, i'm a sophomore in high school and i'm trying to get an understanding on my chances of getting into the academy. i'm aware that GPA plays a big part in getting into the academy but i'm worried that mine is not good enough. I do understand that it is my sophomore year and that I still have the rest of this year and next year to get my grades up but i'm not too sure on how much it will go up by.

I have a 3.4 unweighted and a 4.0 weighted, I am taking 2 AP classes this year and the rest are all honors last year I also took all honors with no AP classes (freshmen are not allowed to).

For my extra circular I am in my schools band (leader of my section), swim team, indoor percussion, and track team.

I also do some public service around my local community when I have the extra time.

If someone could tell me how likely it is for me to get in or to not get in that would be great. If there is any suggestions on what else I can do in order to get in besides getting my GPA up also please let me know.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum! You look like you’ve got a great start for getting into USAFA. Keep the grades as high as you can. Work on preparing for the SAT/ACT. The standardized test scores are weighted heavily.

Keep up on the sports and other ECs. Work toward leadership roles in all of your activities. Stay out of trouble and enjoy high school.

One cannot beat advice from Stealth. Welcome aboard.

Class rank and course rigor — in the context of your school profile — will count for more than the GPA. You’re fortunate: As a sophomore, you have plenty of time to take the hardest classes your school has to offer and to excel in them.

Build good relationships with your teachers, especially for math and English. You’ll need them for LORs.

ECs are good, being a leader in ECs is even better. Focus on just a few that mean the most to you. And make a real, tangible impact as a leader, not just hold a title or put in hours.

Apply to USAFA’s Summer Seminar. It’s a great experience that will help you determine if it’s the right place for you. (Though it will confer no advantage in receiving offer of appointment.) And read up on the career paths out of USAFA to make sure you’re comfortable with them, i.e. what if you can’t fly? Best wishes to you.

currently, I'm applying to take a special leadership class that is recognized by the phi theta kappa honor society and by the end of the 2-semester-long course I will obtain a phi theta kappa certification.

Go take the SAT/ACT ASAP. Get a baseline. Get a feel for what these test feel like. Take both the ACT and SAT. Know where you are at and what you need to work on to improve. Then get to work on studying to improve your scores. By the spring/summer of your senior year you should have taken the tests at least 4-6 times (in my opinion). .... Just my two cents....
