Admissions board meetings

I saw a thread on this before, but I'm not sure if it is the same in my situation.

I am a recruited athlete and I received word from the coach that admissions says they have enough on my file to meet. I read they meet every Thursday, but the coach said he wasn't sure if that was the case during this time of year...

Does the admissions board meet every Thursday? ... and if they are going to review my file, does that mean I will get an answer soon?

None of us can say. The board traditionally meets on Thursdays. That doesn’t mean you will hear on a Thursday or Friday. Do you have a nom? Have you passed DoDMERB? Since it sounds like you fall in the recruited athlete realm, the coach will have a better answer as to when you go to the board than any of us can speculate. But then again there is more to it than that. The coaches might disclose where you fall in the ‘how much of a recruited athlete’ you are. That can determine who presents you to the board.

When you hear from admissions has little to do with when they meet or when they review your file. There are many moving pieces and they're trying to assemble a class, not just accept individuals. There's also the matter of nominations, which is a completely different process. Many examples here of early applicants who wait months for a decision, and later applicants who hear very quickly. In short, there's no way of knowing and no point in speculating.

Note: Cross-posted with @NavyHoops. What she said!

I have a closely related question...
I have all items on my application complete (including BGO interview) except for CFA, which I am training for "two-a-days" in order to do as well as possible. I have received an Air Force JROTC Honor Unit nomination to USNA. However, I was DQd by DODMERB and awaiting a waiver process. Because the Q for CFA is separate from the Q from the Admissions Board, will the board review my file (or put my file in the queue to be reviewed) before I submit my CFA? Or do I have to complete my CFA before the board will even think about considering my app?

Yeah. What they said. For me, the coach asked me to complete the CFA and then the board would review my file.

Have you completed a whole application? Other than the CFA?

Yes. Everything except for medical (pending) and BGO interview and Nom interviews start in a few weeks.

It sounds like you are on the same timeline as everyone else as far as reviewing your package. I thought perhaps you had not much done at all. If you are a high-level recruit, the Coach CAN help with a nomination (ie; blue chip). It also depends on the sport. Some Coaches have more pull, more 'chips' than others (think football and basketball). There is a TON TON TON of stuff around the forum about recruited athletes. If you are curious, you could spend hours looking at it via the search tool. I had a recruited athlete before (who obtained an appointment without Coaches assistance anyhow), and a current one...and their recruitment level is very different (same sport). Also, your level of recruitment can change from month to month...

In general, recruited athletes still have to go through the process and obtain an appointment. Depending on the sport and your recruitment level, the Coach may be able to endorse. I would guess before you receive an actual appointment, you would receive an LOA if you are high level. This is all my opinion from what I've seen on the boards over the years.

To answer your question about 'will I find out soon'...maybe. Just like everyone else. Your Coach would be a good one to ask.

Thank you for the response! Very informative and helpful.

> For clarification, most Nominations are obtained through your Member of Congress. I would be surprised if USNA was letting coaches contact MOC about recruited athletes. I think you are referring to Admissions using one of the VP or Supe nom for Blue Chip recruits. Recruited athletes are still instructed to pursue all available NOM sources.

As an aside, I wish I had a dime for everytime someone asked when the Admissions Board meets, as if they might expect the BFE to show up the next day. The Admissions Board is just one of the 3 Q's...the real work is done by Noms and Appointments, and their work really doesn't start in earnest until the Nominations are submitted.

Apologies, I wasn’t clear. I DO mean that a coach may “endorse” (flag) an application to ADMISSIONS, not contacting a nominating source. But should a high level recruit not be able to obtain a nomination on their own, this is where I meant that a Coach MAY be able to help ‘find one’, through admissions. Not through a nominating source.

Good catch/clarification. Thank you!

While true, I would never bank on that as an applicant. The odds in Vegas are very low. It does happen though.

ABSOLUTELY agree, 100 pct! And a high-level recruit today may not be a high-level recruit tomorrow.
