AFROTC Board Results

Results of March Board

The portal states that USAF ROTC board results will be posted mid-March. Nothing posted yet. Has anyone in Michigan received notification? (Oakland County, MI)

I'm from Michigan (Wayne County), and I received notification of a scholarship on March 7. I don't know if it's the same board, but I figured I'd mention it

AFROTC boards are not like the AFA board. It is national. Thus, what state you are from has no impact on when you will be boarded, it is all about when you met the board. This site is pretty small, but if I had to bet I would bet there is someone in the state of Michigan that has an AFROTC scholarship in hand by now.

yeah bluesky, my portal says results would come out mid march and theres no response for me either yet. It says the board met in february not the march board.

Texchris96,
31 March was the date we received via email from Maxwell AFB.

The Record Board no later than 14 April.

Thanks USMC_Ordie. Nice to have a date in mind now, helps with the anxiety of waiting for a response haha

I was on the February board and received a Type 7 for Aerospace Engineering today! :groupwave:

I'm wondering what the conversion process was like for a type 7 to a type 2?
I'm accepted to a state school where the tuition is $13,472 a year. But I also got accepted to an out of state school where the tuition is $42,294. Would I be eligible to convert?

You certainly can convert it to a 3 year-Type 2. Also keep in mind that the Type 2 will cover up to $18,000/year in tuition. Everything over that will be on you.

As for the process, you can choose it when you accept the offer. It will be one of the options.

Congrats!

It's my understanding that it only takes your signature. As I recall the paperwork is included in the snail mail package you will receive (I'm assuming you found out via your portal).

However, you really need to think about this. You would be converting a 4 year type 7 to a 3 year type 2. So you need to come up with the first years total tuition. Also, the type 2 only covers up to $18,000 in tuition and fees, so you still need to come up with the balance due each semester. Finally, what if you don't make the cut for SFT and are dropped from the program? I know.... no one thinks they'll get cut but it happens all the time. How will you cover that tuition then?

If you have additional scholarships from the OOS or your family has the wherewithal, then perhaps the drawbacks I mention aren't so important. However, I can assure you my DS would be taking the type 7.

Good luck wrestling with this. :thumb:

My DS received an email today from AFROTC and based on what it says he has been re-boarded. Did anyone else receive an email today?

"We appreciated the opportunity to consider your application for an Air Force ROTC scholarship. Although your application was competitive, you were not selected for a scholarship at this time. We will continue to evaluate your application on our scholarship selection board which will convene 31 March through 4 April 2104. You will be notified of the board results 2-3 weeks afterwards."

The exact same happened to me. Its was updated on my portal though, no email for me.

Woot woot!

Just got type 7, needless to say all my worries are gone, just waiting on AFA now!

However I'm sure you guys will get it later! Believe me, I had lower stats than most everyone on here, and I'm not a minority nor an athlete...you guys will just get it later!

Thanks for all the help from everyone on this forum; to those re boarded and rejected, you guys will do great too! And to all fellow scholarship awardees, congrats!

How strange that I got an appointment to the USAFA but not a scholarship, well nevertheless I'm happy! Good luck to those still waiting to hear back from the academy or AFROT!!

Actually it is more common than you think because the AFA is geo-centric when it comes to appointments, whereas, AFROTC scholarships are selected on a national basis and intended major matters.

Congrats on your appointment.

Very happy, DS received an AFROTC Type 7 Technical Scholarship! He plans to study aerospace engineering. Unfortunately, there was a large mistake on the Univ of Washington AFROTC out-of-state tuition rate which stated that out-of-state annual tuition for AFROTC scholarship recipients was 19,000.+. Looks like there is no break on the tuition for AFROTC, it is the full annual 32,000. We are trying to figure out what to do, as this weighs heavily on the cost.

UPortland has good engineering options and they cover room and board and make up the difference in tuition :thumb:

My DS was awarded Type 7 AFROTC scholarship. He was accepted at in-state public, in-state private, and out-of-state public and private schools. The Type 7 can only be used at a PUBLIC IN-STATE school or an out-of-state public school that will give you their in-state rate. None of his OOS schools offer IS rates to OOS students. To use at a private institution, even in-state, he has to convert to 3yr Type 2.

In addition to the out-of-state limitation, HQ told me on the phone that they will apply the Type7 (govt) funds AFTER all other merit scholarships and other govt funds have been applied. Also, since DS received additional merit scholarships with conditions (i.e., maintain 3.0 GPA), the AFROTC funding would not pay anything. HQ said to accept non-ROTC merit scholarships and still be able to use ROTC funds, DS should either 1) ask the school to rewrite the merit scholarship award letters to omit any conditions or 2) convert to Type 2. HQ stated that there is not a conflict between Type 2 and other merit scholarships. However, the fine print on the Type 2 also has the same language about how they may apply the funds, so I'm going to request something in writing. I know policies differ by school; some schools work with you, but some don't.

There are a lot of costs at college - more than tuition, R&B and books/supplies. AFROTC scholarship funds apply to tuition only "and some fees." Stipend is considered to cover R&B, and AFROTC cut their book allowance to $600/year. I did a lot of research on this because there is a financial upside and downside to converting a 4yr Type 7 to a 3yr Type 2. In some instances the 4-year bill is lower; however, if you have govt grants and aid, you will most likely lose it when the ROTC funds are applied. Call the school and discuss it with them. If they tell you that they don't know until they apply the funds, push them to guestimate and review the policy with you. Also, if you have other merit scholarships, find out if those funds can be used to cover non-tuition costs, such as R&B, transportation, dry cleaning (your uniforms), etc..

BTW, I didn't bother asking the school to remove conditions on the scholarships b/c I can't imagine a school or entity negating any conditions of their sponsored scholarship.

Most people don't know that ROTC funds will negate non-ROTC govt funds and private grants that cut into your EFC. Know all the details before you convert. Make a spreadsheet and compare the costs by scholarship type AND by school. If you have questions, call HQ for your branch, your prospective detachment, and the financial aid counselor at each school. One size does not fit all.
