After USMMA Appointment Acceptance - Next Steps

I have 4 wisdom teeth and I've been out for two sailings for 11+ months,

Hmmm. Interesting. I was asymptomatic and had no indications for wisdom teeth removal. Dr. Chan??? Was the dentist when I was at KP, she said I needed them out regardless, had to convince an Oral Surgeon as to why I needed it done. With that said she also said I needed two fillings, what she didn't know is that I had a dental exam at home the week before I saw her, the second opinion dentists all laughed. I think she was just trying to milk KP for some extra cash.

I'm generally cynical and distrustful of patten. If you're really sick at KP, and want to live, go somewhere else, like a veterinarian.

I have to say, my DS was really sick at the end of the first trimester, made worse by the fact that there was no heat in his room for 7 weeks. He had a very good experience with the doctor at KP and felt they did a good job of taking care of him.

My son still has his wisdom teeth (only 2). Dentist filled out the form that said he was fine and they did not have to come out.

From what I understand, that may not matter. The idea of removing wisdom teeth is something that we didn't have during my tenure at KP. In fact, I still have three of my four wisdom teeth and they were never an issue when I sailed. I also don't ever recall being on a voyage and having any crew member or officer have issues with wisdom teeth. I am guessing that there must have been some issues with cadets during Sea Year, and enough to require wisdom tooth removal. . . but that is just my opinion. I hope it goes well for your son. . . .

I don't think you understand. I have 4 wisdom teeth and I've been out for two sailings for 11+ months, never once went to a dentist except before sea. Although one of the officers on my ship did get removed for his wisdom teeth. He was a Schuyler grad, not KP. Do you make this type of assumption out there as a loss adjuster?

Oooh, I guess I have been schooled. I make no assumptions. I have been told in that removing wisdom teeth was a requirement. Perhaps that was not correct. Be careful with the attitude.

I cant believe any academy or branch of the military would force you to remove your wisdom teeth if they perfectly fine and arent causing any issues. The fact that they may cause issues in future is like like saying that your appendix or tonstils should be removed because they could act up the in the future.

Everything you need to know is in the reporting manual. He started taking care of each item right away so there would be no last-minute stress. As long as you do that, you'll be fine. I did make copies of every single document - both hard copies and scanned copies - just in case there was an issue at INDOC. I also made scanned copies of his TWIC card, health insurance card, driver's license, etc. I keep all of the information in a special folder on my computer just in case. Another thing I started early was getting some notes and letters prepared. I created 15 postcards from our cat Bailey to him - basically Bailey's adventures at USMMA's rival the Coast Guard Academy. :) I sent a note of encouragement every day or so during INDOC and also asked family and friends to write to him - he actually set a record for the most mail received during INDOC! I concur with the others that I don't think it's a great idea to have him report to INDOC right from vacation. He'll want to be rested. He may also want to say some last goodbyes to family and friends.
Oh, and we had an account set up with Navy Federal beforehand too. His Dad and I are both on the account which helps if he needs money for something quickly we can deposit money right away for him.
When will the reporting manual for 2023 be released?

Someone had posted the manual from the previous year so I had an idea of what we needed as far as the medical stuff, early, and made sure all the vaccinations were up to date. Once the manual came I did everything as quickly as I could. I'm not a procastinator so I wasn't going to leave anything to the last minute. He filled out the required paperwork right away and mailed back whatever was required. I made sure to make copies of everything though, just in case something got lost. You have plenty of time to do everything, and they are very helpful if you have questions. Have you looked at last year's reporting manual?

Have you attended last year a barbecue or some kind of meeting the night before reporting for indoc organized from USMMA sports coaches? What was the duration and was it only for future USMMA athletes or family members were also invited? I know that each year and for each sport is different and this year the reporting date has been moved to July 5. Asking for planning purposes.

The swim team met for about an hour the day before Indoc. The recruits went outside with the older midshipmen to get to know each other, and the parents stayed inside with the coach. The swimmers then met early the next morning and walked in together.

2023 Mom, I'd be happy to help too as we just went through this last year. I also have some fun ideas for sending mail during INDOC if you're interested.

I will have to circle back to this post WHEN (if) he gets his appointment....
Thank you

The list is short, but it can add up depending how much you spend per each category.
I believe that the most expensive shoes are not always the best.
Didn't like Amazon's navigation when choosing color and size for shoes. I know that there are a lot of websites and I wanted to share a useful web site.
Was using the following aggregation web site for running shoes to find good shoes at a reasonable price - https://runrepeat.com/ranking/rankings-of-white-running-shoes?sizes-m-us=us_125
For example DS already ordered and received the Asics Gel Contend 4. Not the priciest and they have the most reviews. They have a decent support, good toe box and are bit stiff at the ankle. He is happy with his choice and he got them at even better price - $29. Now he needs to break them in. The prices on the runrepeat will change based on the deals on the aggregated selling web sites - Amazon, 6pm etc.

There is a Personal Gear Order Form you will receive with your packet. The prices are really decent, and there is no tax. Another benefit to ordering from them is that the items will be waiting there for your son and he won't have to lug them around on INDOC reporting day.

Thank you for sharing this @joriebelle .
Interesting - PT gear is missing from the 2022 reporting instructions and kind of expensive on your order form. Was the PT gear mandatory? Is the order form for class of 2022?
Saw that you didn't order socks and underwear for example. Did you purchase them separately?
Shoes are missing on your form too, so DS's shoe purchase wasn't a waste.

Yes, PT gear is mandatory. I didn't think it was expensive. I've since bought him a few more of the t-shirts as he wears those all the time. Yes, that was the one of the order forms for Class of 2022. Yes, I did purchase socks and underwear separately and he brought that in a duffel bag. I found those on sale so I ordered them myself. Right, shoes are not on the form. I also bought for him a large oversized white towel. You may have heard this already, but most of them don't sleep under their covers because they don't want to set their bed every day; it takes my son 15-20 minutes to set his bed correctly. Many of them use the oversized towel as a blanket and then just put it away every morning.
