AIM Decisions

Bear's Day was incredible! On one hand it cemented my daughter's desire the CGA route, but on the other hand it has completely ruined her for all other colleges and has made coming up with a plan B much more difficult! She's a swimmer and wants to swim in college, wants to attend a high academic school, and is determined to somehow become an officer in the Coast Guard, so finding a great Plan B that would accomplish all those things is a challenge. The academy would check all the boxes!
My son was the EXACT same way. It was an incredibly stressful year. His "B" plan was to reapply the following year. We encouraged him to apply for ROTC programs. When he got to the essay question..."why do you want to come here" he said he couldn't apply, he didn't want to lie....He didn't want to be anywhere else. Luckily he got in, and we love the academy and the swim team!! If your daughter hasn't reached out already, have her reach out to the coach!

That's so great!

Yes, she has been in contact with Coach John and Mary. She talked to Coach John for about an hour and a half at Bear's Day. He seems like a great guy!

She was fortunate enough to be paired with a 4/c swimmer that day and they've stayed in contact via text.

She's so pumped for AIM!

Has anyone been able to switch sessions for the in-person experience? Ex. switching from session 1 to session 2.

Was anyone else surprised to get in? I applied because this is my dream school, but thought I wouldn't be competitive enough to get into AIM

My son got accepted to the virtual session. What are the chances of being "moved up" to attending in person? Knowing how high airline tickets are, I will not be too disappointed if he doesn't get to attend in person.

My son applied to summer sessions for USMA, USAFA, and USNA. He got rejected by all 3.
I don't know "Chances" or anything, but my son just got the email that he'd been selected for in-person, having been selected for virtual at the outset. Airline prices are horrible, and flights from our area in central CA are quite limited to those airports, but we're making it work.

If it works for you, I'd suggest finding flights a day earlier than the pickup date. They are usually cheaper but you'd have to book a lounge or just bang it out overnight at the airport. Additionally, USCGA is allowing kids that have saturday flights to stay a day more to accommodate. Hope this info is useful for you.

Just a curious question for those attending session #3 (Jul 17-22). What day is everyone flying into Hartford? I was looking at flying into Hartford on the 16th, stay at the Navy Lodge across the river and then drop him off at the Academy on the 17th. My alternate plan is to have my son fly to Hartford alone on the 17th, and then contacting the USCGA for a shuttle. Not sure what date(s) the shuttle operates from Hartford to USCGA. Does anyone have any suggestions?

If he arrives on the 16th, he must provide his own transportation. If he arrives on the 17th (Sunday), there should be a bus leaving from either airport at 1pm. I believe he would have to submit his name to be on the bus. The info below is from the AIMster handbook:

If needed, bus services will be provided for AIM participants arriving on Sunday (Reporting-In Day) and departing on Friday (Graduation Day) who will not be accompanied by a parent/guardian. Additional transportation services will be provided Saturday morning for departing flights on Saturday, as needed on a case-by-case basis. Do note that there is limited capacity for Saturday morning. Students planning to arrive on alternate dates are responsible for arranging their own transportation to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy when reporting in for AIM. Bus services to/from Providence, Rhode Island (T.F. Green Airport) and Hartford, Connecticut (Bradley International Airport) will be arranged by the Academy to pickup unaccompanied students at 1:00p.m. on Sunday and to leave after the AIM Graduation on Friday afternoon. Students are free to depart after Graduation at 2:00 pm. Please bring a copy of your travel itinerary. For Sunday, the bus departure from both airports is set for 1:00 p.m. For Friday, do not schedule airline departures prior to 5:00 p.m. Transit to/from the most local airports takes approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.

yes, we've been in contact with LT Bradley and he said that they area arranging a second shuttle for Saturday arrivals from Hartford for session 2 for solo flyers. I missed the Town Hall on the 14th (previously scheduled trip - we were in the air pacific time for that) so it may have been addressed there.

To my knowledge, nothing of a second shuttle was mentioned for earlier arrivals. If you were able to get into contact with LT Bradley about getting a second shuttle please PM the info, thanks!

If a student is arriving Saturday evening unaccompanied to an airport, we will provide a shuttle to the USCGA to ensure their safe arrival prior to Sunday kickoff. Likewise we will provide an additional shuttle on Sunday at Noon. Upon program conclusion, we will have the schedule depart after graduation and then again Saturday morning by 0400 for Saturday morning flights headed home.

Great, when will the Saturday shuttle take off? Considering that I land at Bradley around 1500.

I did see a small video clip. A friend of a friend of DS#1 is cadre at AIM and sent DS#2 some brotherly love from DS#1 who is at USAFA🤣 The cadre seem nice🤣🤣🤣

Thank you! I'd love to know the approximate time for that shuttle, if already known, as our candidate's flight arrives at 1735. We'd also like to know where to meet the driver, as that airport is completely unknown to any of us in the family, so DS is needing a destination within the airport. Thank you again!
