Just to be perfectly clear, there is ZERO chance of a submarine launching its missiles without authorization from the National Command Authority (that's the President), so that scenario really can't happen.











Of course, if Hillary gets elected then all bets are off. :wink::biggrin:

VMINROTChopeful - as a female knows what she is up against. She may be going to school next year with a bunch of guys who will not respect her simply because she is female. Sad but true. She knows that many women before her have paved the way fighting sexism and disrespect from men who were "only joking".
It is kind of hard to see the humor in men perpetuating the myth of women who are too emotional or moody to handle "important" work.
Now if we want to make fun of each other - that is another story!

Men can make fun of their own inability to stop for directions but often get offended if women make fun of it.
Same goes for women - we can make fun of our own situations with each other.
For a man to make fun of the biology of women is most often construed by women as "not joking" - even if you thought you were.
It is best to make fun of your own kind, with your own kind. Lesson of the day.

I very much agree with you on some points, and very much disagree on others.

Since I'm realtively knew onto the forums, here's some background information. I have utmost respect for women. My girlfriend will be attending USAFA and I wish her and every other female cadet at any service academy only the best. In fact, I think its totally awesome when a woman can kick a man's butt at something, be it my own butt or someone else's. Contrary to what you suggest, I do not hold the belief that women are "too moody to hold important positions". With both of my parents in the corporate world for their employment, I know for a fact that certian positions are prefered to be occupied by women because of their superior emotional stability and logical reasoning ability compared to the average male placed in the same situation.

FYI- It really pisses me off when people who don't even know me steryotype me into the regular 90% of men. You'll find that indeed I do not fit in that category.

For you to go so far as to suggest that a man cannot poke small fun at the occasional moodiness of women is absurd. I understand it is not pleasant, and I'm thankfull that I dont have to go through it. However, humor can lighten any situation and this is no exception. I say again- Lighten Up!

Please trust me when I say that I have never met nor talked to a person who is more disgusted with the sexisim situation at the academies than myself. Perhaps you are the first, and that by no means is a bad thing. Ever read the abuse report that used to be burried down at the absolute bottom of the Air Force's website? Honestly made me want to puke.

No disrespect was intended, and I made further posts clearly outlining that. That I am now justifiying myself for a small bit of innocent hummer is in and of itself not amusing to me.

Upsidedownz, I don't think that anyone meant to offend you and we understand that you did not mean to offend anyone. Sometimes something you meant to say as a joke, is taken as an offensive comment by someone else. We understand that you are a good guy and support women. The point I think some other people were trying to make is that if women started making fun of male vulnerability, you may or may not be offended. I was not personally offended by your joke, but I can understand where they are coming from. FYI: The whole moodiness thing is actually not really true for a lot of girls, myself being one of them. (Sorry if you have to put up with your girlfriends moodiness. I hate when peers<of both sexes> act moody and strange...how annoying! LOL.:shake:)

Side note: Coastie is a perfectly acceptable term. "Puddle Pirate" may be used jokingly between Coasties (my CG hockey team in a week is called the Puddle Pirates), but when used by anyone else, especially a Navy squid, could very well lead to a fight.

Here's something my girlfriend does, which I think is cute, but usually not at the time...

When I'm driving, and she's giving me directions, she bases the directions off of where she's looking. So if she's looking at the intersection down the street, she'll say "then turn right here." I turn right, but it's too early, because I don't know what she's refering to as "here". It happens all the time. It has almost caused a few accidents. It's cute to me, but never while it's going on.

My loving fiancee does something worse.

I'll be driving and I'll ask her "Which way do I turn?"

She'll point silently. She doesn't seem to understand that a) I can drive and listen at the same time, and b) it's really dangerous for me to have to take my eyes off the road at a busy intersection or exchange to see which way she's pointing. :mad:

Of course, when she DOES speak up, she'll say, "Turn right" while pointing left. :confused1:

Sigh.... :rolleyes:

I'm thinking of giving her rudder commands next time she's the one driving. Should be fun........... assuming I survive the attempt. :biggrin:

you see, i think some ppl will do it for fun (like you) and then there will be ppl who will do it as a real put down, like the following comment that hit me out of the blue on the internet from someone who knew nothing about me except that i am seriously thinking about going to [unnamed military college] and that i am a female (see if you can count how many different gender stereotypes are contained in this one run-on spew of hate (LOL).

jokes are funny, but they are half-serious stereotypes. in fact, my stepmother says that every joke contains a gram of truth. and if you repeat a half-truth enough, it becomes the whole truth. :frown:

i thought this female submariner story was real and so i crossposted it on another navy internet social forum. how much do you want to bet that completely independently of your joke here upsidedownz, some 3 or 4 naval officers over there almost immediately started joking about synchronized PMS on that thread too? :rolleyes:

While a ridiculous application of a stereotype to an unknown individual, the sad fact is that far too many women HAVE behaved PRECISELY that way. Not many as a percentage, but it doesn't take many.

Back when I was a Youngster at USNA, I remember one Plebette who got yelled at because she didn't know her menu. She called Mommy. Mommy called (and somehow got a hold of) someone on President Reagan's staff (reckon she either had connections or some really good luck).

As they say, excrement rolls downhill, gathering momentum as it does so. It wasn't pretty when the excrement tsunami arrived on the banks of the Severn. :mad:

We had a great time requiring our Plebes to answer that their Administrative Chain of Command was "Me, my Mommy, and the President of the United States, SO THERE!" :rolleyes:

Look, provided you are NOT one of those, and provided you do what you're supposed to do without trying to skate any special favors, you'll be just fine and your classmates will respect the hell out of you. If you DON'T do that, well, they'd think just as little of you if you were male and pulled that kind of crap.

Let the knee-jerk naysayers bray. I've seen awesome female officers and lousy male ones. The reverse is true, too.
