Annapolis Questions

3. Favorite restaurants (preferably local not chain type places)
- Iron Rooster is a classic, also on the affordable side
- if you're feeling something more expensive, choptank is new and good
- chick & ruths is also a classic, a lot of mids eat here
- boatyard
- smack dab in the center of DTA is the market house(?), crab dip is amazing

(those are just a few to name my faves, anywhere to eat in Annapolis is pretty good if you like crab/seafood)

Not looking forward to my mid store card being punched out the day of commissioning. Just honest about complaining about that up front. Feels like they could have given us a week or so. Spoken like a true USNA parent.

Word to the wise. Get your permanent card after the current class graduates. It is good for 3 years from the date of receipt. Get it before graduation, and your card will more than likely expire before your kid graduates.
You would have to wait until Block 1 after Plebe year to not have to renew it at all.
This is one of the annoying aspects of MIDN parent life we must all overcome. It is probably smart to renew it 2C weekend, if trying not to make a special weekday trip.

Speaking of complaining... I wish the midstore carried a bit more "big navy" items to help firstie parents start updating their wardrobes. There are USMC sections, but not as much regarding USN in general. Especially since 3/4 of 1C parents would be in the market for new attire.

(To be fair, I am going off memory prior to Service Selection, so I may have not been looking hard enough...)

Check out the gift shop near Gate 1 -- the one the tourists visit. It has a fairly different (albeit smaller) inventory that I recall includes some Big Navy stuff. About a quarter of my tuition payments have been made at that location rather than at the mid store. 😆

They issue you a paper copy as a Plebe/4C parent. So you don't actually go through all the picture and fingerprint taking. That comes when you get your permanent card later. In the permit to report package, it will provide instructions for submitting. Then, when you go on the Yard for I-Day, you can pick it up while waiting to go through security.

Since we're local (and I forgot to send the paperwork in), I went in a few weeks after I-Day and got my paper copy for rhe wife and I in person without the crowd.

You will also be able to go to the Mid Store and get your permanent card for there, which will allow you to shop there without your mid, any time it is open. It is a separate thing than the DBIDS card.
Not to dispute your experience, but our c/o 2027 paper passes weren't available until PPW. I picked them at a white tent near Gate 1 and the visitor center. I went in a few weeks later to get the DBIDS card.

BGOs are authorized users of the MIDSTORE.

FWIW, allowing parents and other outsiders into the MIDSTORE other than during PPW and Grad Week is a relatively recent change. For many years, the MIDSTORE was only open to Mids and "Officers assigned to the Annapolis Complex". During the non-authorized times, parents and others were limited to the Visitors Center and the souvenir shops out in town. As I recall, the first crack in that wall was when they allowed Alumni who were life members of the Alumni Assoc in and then BGOs.

You've made my day good sir!!!

I usually stayed at Historic Inns of Annapolis. Great location- walking distance to USNA and food. Never needed my car.
Agreed. Last summer we flew in to BWI to pick up DS from Summer stem and we just took UBER to Annapolis. I just checked, it was 6:47 pm and cost $49.96. We stayed at the Historic Inn's of Annapolis Maryland Inn. We just walked everywhere from there or you could UBER. No parking fees, no worry about finding parking spots etc. Waited 5 mins at the airport for the UBER so no going to a car counter. I think this is the way to go unless you want to travel the area extensively. Even moderate travel around may still be cheaper with a ride share service

Holy crap! That's what I get for not going downtown lately!

Not that I frequented it much there. As far as I know, the one in Columbia (near us) is still around.

That area of the city dock is being completely rebuilt and reconfigured. They need to protect it from rising sea levels and constant flooding, but also want to make it more useful to the public. Phase One of a four part, two year project is about to begin. You can see the plans and drawings on their website…
